Hi I am new to this and I was dignosed as bipolar in 2006! I do take meds and see the doctors! I get very depressed and say things to my kids that I don't mean and I don't remember saying! I love my kids very much and I feel like I am losing them because they don't understand what I go threw on a daily basis! I need help to understand all of this!

Hi Ruth,

Welcome to HealingWell and the bipolar board. It is so hard to express the guilt and frustration we feel about our relationships with our loved ones sometimes. You probably need to call your doc and make sure your meds are optimized. If you're getting depressed, your meds might not be working so great. You don't say how old your kids are, but if they're adults then you can ask them to get more educated about your illness. A great book to give them or recommend is The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide by David Miklowitz. This book is really useful both for people suffering from the disorder and their families.

Thank you for your advise! My kid's are 22 and 25 years old and I will try to get them to understand! But when it comes to my illness they kinda shut the door!

They shut the door because they do not want you to be sick, that is the way my spouse is sometimes.  They have to get educated about it and that will help them deal with it and probably save you alot of grief in the aftermath.

Good Luck
