How to handle verbal abuse

I posted another link before but it was a little lengthy. What I truly want to know is, does having bipolar make people do or say hurtful things?  I can understand the anger part of BP, but what I don't get is why hw has to deal with it by saying a doing mean things to me.  He claims it's part of BP.  Is this true?
