right now I am only on Xanax.  Have tried every "approved" mood stabilizer, lithium, antipsych. drug, they all made me really sick or worsened my symptoms.  I give up, really.  The last round was Tegretol and lamictal, throwing up for days on end is not my idea of balance and I have to work, have to.  So, today I have a new attitude that here has to be, has to be a better way to feel better.  If there is anyone out there that cannot tolerate meds and has found any alternative way to help manage this disorder, please let me know what has worked for you.  Have been researching Lithium Aspartate, may give it a try.  I am also going through menopause, talk about PMS 24/7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any suggestions?

Wow, that is a tough decision you have to make. Some people tolerate meds well and others not, sounds like you are a definete not. LOL LOL So how can you live without med? well lets take a look.

I for one have noticed certain triggers in my life, stresses that cause me to make bad decisions that can lead me into trouble. If you can i would make an honest list of things you get in trouble with. Example like me, its all about sex. Gambling, drugs, drinking, spending have little interest for me. So if i have to go off meds than i have to be especially carefull of all things sex related. I told my wife if things ever get out of control and the meds arnt helping than i would get a divorce so i wouldnt drag us down that awfull road of affairs again.
So thinking of stuff like that i have thought about living alone, controlling my stresses and doing what i need to do safely survive.

So if you can start with an honest list of what your danger areas are, Is it spending, depression, drugs, whatever it is. This way you can have a chance of making a life with bipolar that does not include meds. I for one know i couldnt be with someone if i was off my meds, does that also apply to you also?

So i do think you can live without meds, but lets face it, it will both be harder and easier. Harder because you will have to deal with this beast with nothing other than your wits and your strenght. Easier because you know that you have tried all the meds aviable and they just dont work for you. If new meds come out than you can give them a shot and hopefully gain some relief.

I hope this helps, i'm not feeling totally on my game today so my answer might be a bit messy. That said i do believe you can live with it without drugs if you are honest with yourself and take precautions.

Keep us posted.

Thanks Bill, your advice made perfect sense.  It has been such a long road trying meds, going off meds, never quiet finding one that suited for more than a week or two.  I have been trying through my "journaling" to figure out what triggers me and what the good things I do for myself that keep me going.  I guess it will always be a struggle, but then again, I guess everyone struggles with something.

GOod for you to have such a good attitude. We all fight some battle, we wouldnt be human if we didnt. So you are stepping up to the plate and taking on a big, bad monster. But you have 4 years plus of living with and knowing this monster, so in many ways its smaller and less scary than it used to be. It can still hurt you to be sure, but often the only time it can hurt you is if you let your guard down for even a minute.
And guess what, you're human and yes there will be times you let your guard down and sometimes it will  bite you and others it won't. Just have to live and learn.

Keep us posted and i admire your courage in taking on this thing head on.
