So he asked DH what the top 3 things he wanted to change.
1.  His anger
2.  Ability to sleep
3.  Anxiety

He Rx'd him Ambien, however DH really does not want to take it b/c he does not want to be dependent.
He also recommended he up the dose of Trileptal to 3 times a day vs. 2 times a day.  He also started him on Intuniv once daily for possible ADHD.  The doc basically is saying he's not sure what all he has going on, so it's trial by error.

Is this normal to treat this way?  I just am worried that he's on and off meds and I really want to get to what the root issue is.
Me:  33 yr old full time employee, part time Nursing student, full time mom to 4 children.
Taking 100mg Zoloft since delivering my last child.   Found out hypothyroidism at
age after tons of testing, from passing out.  3 years ago DX'd Hashimoto's Disease.

DH:  34 yr old landscaper, recently laid off, in school for Biotechnology, dad to 2 bio
daughters and step father to 2 great boys.
        History of substance abuse
        Depression
Sexual abuse as young child (never dealt with)
Severe sensitivity to medications of any kind.
Recently DX'd with manic depression, Bipolar for starters.  Dr. said many more to come.
Started Serequel and Tirlopine tonight, dropped Serequel due to high anxiety.

DS1: 14 yr old boy, classic teen, HX of depression and behavior disorder since age 6, was controlled well with Zoloft and Abilify, hospitalized for 12 days.  Now he's been med free x 4 years!!!

DS2:  Athletic 9 yr old boy, healthy and smart, but shy.  Some anxiety issues with thoughts of death of family.

DD1: 7 yr old blond beauty, thankfully no issues.

DD2:  Speech delayed, DX'd with Cognitive Social Disorder. No meds required.

Root issue: a chemical imbalance in his brain.  Could be one of several - they really don't know how this disorder works.

Meds are hit and miss.  I hope they find a good one soon, without too much suffering through side effects.  Looking for the right med is seriously miserable.  Finding the right one is beyond priceless.  :)

I think there is always some trial and error to the medications and the response or lack of response to a med can often help the doc in determning the DX.  However, I do think there is such a thing of trying too much and making too many changes in a short time.  Sounds like the doc is leaning towards ADHD.  It's your husband's choice, but he should not worry too much on becoming dependent on a drug as long as he follows the prescription and does not abuse the drug.  If the doc prescribed it, your hubby should at least give it a try....may give him a good night's sleep.  anyway, be patient....these things take time.

So far so good on both doses. I pray we can get it under control. This stuff is scary.
Why are some people w/ bipolar on 1 or 2 meds and then some are on 4 or 5, or really higher doses??

Everyone is different is the short answer!  The meds change in doses or "cocktails" because bipolar is a cyclical illness.  I was doing great at 100mg of my med.  Inject some stress into my life and then it takes 200 mg to stabilize.

Yea same for me. I do fine on .5mg of respirdal but when stress hits really hard i have to up it to 1.0 mg. This illness is all about ups and downs. THats why i have said before that there will be good days and bad days. Right now i am suffering thru a bad couple of days, but i am in control, but suffering.
ANd sometimes thats what this is. In control but suffering. That sometimes is the "best" a day is going to be.

But there are days that we can move mountains, and i live for those days.
