hi.  my name is maddie and i am 17
i was joining this forum hopefully to get some advice.  as wierd as this may sound i am desperate to be diagnosed with something so i will know what is wrong, yet at the same time i am too scared of knowing so i havnt sought help.  i am not sure if i have bipolar or depression.
how extreme should episodes of mania be for me to have bipolar as opposed to depression.   when i have what i think could possibly be mania i buy heaps of food, buy dvds uncontrolably and speak way too much about nothing really fast to all my friends even though its obvious that they arnt interested.
when i am in a depressive state i tend to be silent or critical

i would love to know what you guys think who have been through this disease and i apologize in advance if i have wasted your time and i am on the wrong track

happy bill

First of all welcome.  Now to your questions. We are in no way qualified to diagnose what you may or maynot have based on a couple of small items you have written. That is where a qualified Pdoc comes in and works with you over a course of time to help understand what you may or may not have.

It's hard to say if you are BP or if you are just dealing with what many teenagers go thru, buying lots of stuff, talking fast and being moody depressed type people when they are down.

Trust me, i hope for your sake that you are just a normal teenager who is just having normal teenage things. You don;t want any part of this BP thing. Its a game and life changer and not allways for the better.  If you really want to know get in touch with a good Pdoc and get started on finding the answers to your questions. At the very worst you find out you do have BP, or you find out you don't. Either way the answers that tell you want it isnt also help you understand what it might be.

  Good luck Bill

Welcome to HW :-)
Bill is correct, we cannot diagnose and I know that's not what you meant...you just want some insight. But really the best thing for you to do is to keep track of how you are feeling everyday (symptoms; it sounds like you've done some research) and meantime try to see a psychiatrist. A pdoc will be able to give you the answers you need.
Sure what you describe can be considered as depression and hypomania symptoms so I think seeking help would be a great idea and don't be afraid. You said so yourself: you would like to know....
