Just wondering who is on Topamax and with what combination of other drugs. I've been on Lamictal for nearly 2 months. My doctor cut down my dosage due to some abnormal side effects (numbness, lack of apathy). Now that I'm down to 50 mg a day, I feel some tough times coming. He wanted me to think about other alternatives.

Please, any feed back is extremely helpful.

I have heard it can make you really slow down upstairs. But I have heard that about alot of anti-manic drugs, all depends on the individul I guess. Im already dumb as a door nail, so I sure dont need anything adding to that
im a professional... on an amateur level !

OMG!! Love love love topamax. The side effects are great...they cause weight loss...how snazzy is that! But for a mood stabilizer, it didn't do a whole heck of a lot. I was on 600 mg and it didn't do much. I was also on zoloft at the time. But hell, if you want a drug to help balance the rest of the drugs weight gaining thing...topamax is the way to go!

Okay. Can they give Topamax with Lithium? I REALY don't want to gain any weight. When I was on Prozac, I lost some and was starting to feel good about myself. Now I'm off the Prozac, on Lamictal and am gaining weight again. I really hate that. The Lamictal is not working and I know the next step is Lithium.

I didn't gain on lamictal. But I never had it with prozac. My personal opinion (not granted...I'm not a doctor. Have you seen that shirt that says: "Trust me, I'm a doctor!" I'm one of those few people who shouldn't wear that shirt...ever! :) )

Anyways...my personal opinion, and something I would ask the real doc...would be b/c topamax causes anorexia and lithium causes weight gain...if you took them together, would those side effects in essence cancel each other out? I think they just might. But I would def. ask that.

good luck & let me know the outcome.

Ya know, I was thinking about this...you could just call the doc's office and either leave a message for him or ask the nurse there. Or you could even call a pharmacist. Because I feel like they would know just as much.

My experience w/ Topamax (100mg) has not been a good one.  I'm still on it unfortunately sad It has had the anorexic effect on me and I have gone from 155lbs (which was a lot of weight gain from other meds - my reg. weight before getting sick was 125lbs) down to 115lbs.  I'm also on Wellbutrin (200 mg) and recently started taking Imovane again for sleep and added Lorazepam (0.5 mg) to the mix because of a stressful situation I just went through.  Since I started Topamax I have completely lost my appetite for almost everything and anything and have to force myself to eat every meal.  It absolutely sucks! My stomach gets upset most of the time after I eat so tummy mint tea has become my best friend (that stuff is magical!).  When I'm under stress of course eating is much more difficult for me and at one point it was taking me 3 attempts to eat a regular size meal.  By the time I sat down to eat the 3rd time I could barely force myself to eat the rest of the meal and after microwaving it so many times it tasted like crap by then so I usually just tossed it!  Anyway, I could go on and on about the torture of eating, nausea, the battle between my mind and body and so on...but I'm sure you get the point.  I'm sure your wondering why the hell I'm I still on the crap then!!!!  Well my choice is to go back on the med. that made me blow up to 155lbs which made me hate my body (it's called Epival btw).  I was extremely unhappy at that weight and although I am tall, I didn't mind gaining some of the weight but I gained it weird and the back of my neck was thick and my back was really fat + I looked swollen (not natural weight gain - med. weight gain).  I don't know if anyone else can tell a diff. when someone gains weight from a med. and it is usually fast and the weight sometimes packs on in weird places.  It happen to my friend with Chromes (if that's how you spell it) disease and it just didn't look natural at all when she had to take this med. that did this to her.  When I started my meds and she saw how quickly I was gaining the weight and how bloated I was she completely understood! I'm glad I lost it all, well actually not all, I wanted to stay at 135-130 some where around there.  All I can do is try to adjust!  This summer I'm going on a weight gaining mission with my step sister and we are going to buy some protein powder (not sure what kind yet but if anyone knows of any good ones that helps you gain weight please let me know) and workout.  I'm hoping that since I don't have as much stress in my life at the moment that I can focus on me and slowly increase the amount I eat (oh I forgot to mention that I can only eat a little bit at a time because I get full very fast as in a few bites and I'm full it's ridiculous). That's why I got to the point of trying to eat a regular size meal 3 diff. times. Anyway, if this plan doesn't work I'm not sure what is going to happen because I know my shrink doesn't want to change my med's but I can't see myself dealing with the side effects of the Topamax much longer.  Also, I don't know what we'd change them to because I refuse to take anything that will make me gain weight!  I'm not the easiest patient to work with tongue Why can't there be something in the middle - a med that doesn't make you blow up or make you anorexic! Gosh! mad Sorry soul2bleed just getting out my frustrations in my post! Sorry my post isn't good news but med's do effect people differently so I hope you benefit from this med.  I hope I can gain some weight and stay on this med if there are no other options for mood stabilizers that I'll actually agree to taking.  I really don't care to go on the roller coaster ride of changing a med again either!  Anyway, let me know if you have any questions and good luck to ya :-)

Emily...
Has it worked as a mood stabilizer? I would absolutely love to loose weight, but I want my mind to be okay too. I don't want to take it for the wrong reasons. I am BPII with a lot of depression and every few months mania. I think that part of my depression stems from my weight. I just don't love myself. When I was smaller 125lbs or so, my self confidence was awesome. Now is a different story at 190 lbs.

Thank you for your reply and I am really sorry that you are having such a miserable time. Look for protein that specifically has "weight gain" on it and make sure the calories are really high.

How does it work as a mood stabilizer???  LOL good question, actually I'm not really sure!  I've been so focused on all the horrible side effects I haven't even thought about it!  Also, I have never kept a mood chart or anything and only recently started making notes for my shrink appointments (but I only write them up the day before I go in to see him), bad Emily!  I just checked out a website last night (I know I'm not supposed to mention any so I won't say which one) and did some reading because I'm actually not that educated on BP and med's.  It took me a long time to accept my diagnosis and for the longest time I just wanted to be on an antidepressant and not a mood stabilizer but now that I've learnt more about BP I realize the major episode I had and all the things I was doing at the time I'm definitely BP(type 1 btw)!!!!  So I've accepted a mood stabilizer has to be in the my cocktail mix (that's what I like to call it tongue ).  Anyway, getting back to your question, I find it hard to answer because I've been going through a stressful time since Jan. and I started Topamax maybe (hmm I don't really remember- est. 6 months before that) in which I was really depressed and not in the greatest state of mind.  I don't remember much of 2005, I was a complete zombie and my med's changed so much I was just out of it! When your on other med's how the hell can you tell what is doing what???  All I know is when I started Wellbutrin I noticed a really big difference.  I felt more like myself than I had in a long time.  As for Topamax hmmmm I don't really feel like I am a good judge of it because I haven't kept track of my mood cycle.  At times when things have been good in my life (no stress) I was really stable so I guess it is safe to say that the Topamax is effective for me and when I am going through tough times my shrink doesn't increase the dose of my meds because he doesn't want to send me on a roller coaster ride basically while I'm already on one since stressful situations in your life always pass.  Well, I hope you can make some sort of sense out of my rambling but my advice to you is since you are already on it and weight is an issue for you why not try it out and stick with it to see how it works for you.

My doc lowered my Lamictal last week to 50mg due to side effects. He said to call if I am having some issues (high/low emotions) which I am (rapid cycling). I'm going to call today and ask about Topomax and an antidepressent.  I really appreciate your telling me about your experiences. I hope that your stress has lessened for you.

Starting Topamax tonight. Keep your fingers crossed. Since my Lamictal was reduced last week, I've been on a rapid-cycle ever since.

HI

I am on 600mg Seroquel/1200mg Lithium/25mg topomax.

I got up to 125mg Topamax-was prescribed for weight loss. I found I was irritable, had some undesirable/bizarre neurlogical symptoms , hair loss (still on 25mg). Being on 25mg I feel alright but I am not losing weight so I wonder, what is the point?

Everyone is different on this stuff. Make sure you give it a chance, but keep track of side effects. I have been on sooooo many meds in the last year and a half, takes awhile to find your cocktail!

Good luck

Hi,

I am taking Topamax for yet another reason altogether. I have tumors embedded in the nerve roots just beside my spinal cord of my neck. I can not lay down and pain was making sleep impossible. I was told to take the topamax at night before bed as a sleep aid and a nerve-desensitisor. That it could inhibit nerve transmissions and potentially enable me to cope through the night. That it is dangerous to take during the day and I am only to take during the day as a last resort when all other pain meds fail and my condition is brutally unbearable. I must say, I do know that it works to some extent. I made the mistake of forgetting to take it once. Just once. The next day by 1pm I couldn't move from the pain. I took it then, eventually fell asleep and never made that mistake again. I have noticed a decreased appetite, but not any extreme weight loss. But I think other meds have put weight on me. I am not aware of any other noticable side effects. I must say though, I am surprisingly upbeat and optimistic considering my bleak outlook! I take 300mg effexor xr as well, and with all that's going on in my life you'd think I was Job, but I never find myself feeling sad, down or even worrying about my increasingly paralyzed left arm...raising my 4 sons, money (lack of it) or my a**hole estranged husband that actually said, "When I said in sickness and health, I didn't actually mean it. I was just repeating what the guy said." And has recently accussed me of 'playing the sickness card', and whined that he can never 'win' against that!
I think I would have to say it must be doing something good for my mood!
Best regards,
d.

I was on topamax for a while but it caused such bad memory problems for me that I couldn't work. I was switched to geodon and I am sooo much better.  I don't notice any side effects.  I feel better that I have ever felt in my whole life.  I also take effexor in am and pm.  Other than that I don't take any psych meds.  Good luck
