Hi Everyone,
My sister has been on Lithium since November. She's become a zombi. I was wondering
why her doctor refusses to put her on an anti-depressant med with it?
She's not the happy perseon she used to be. Should she get a second opition. She's been
seeing the same med doc for over 10 yrs. Sometimes I feel she just doesn't care about
my sisters well being.
Thanks for any advice.

donna,

your sister is lucky to have someone like you on her side.  i congradulate you for for caring.  in your post, you said that your sister has been prescribed lithium since november.  but you never say who did the rx.  is it her medical dr, gp, psychiatrist, or therapist?  only a trained and experienced psychiatrist (imho) can make a proper diagnosis of bp and decide which, out of several, mood stabelizers to prescribe.

my normal stae is depressive, with the odd manic binges.  i have been on lithium since 2001 and on welbutrin since last year.  i changed pdocs because i felt that the other one wasn't really interested in my health anymoire - io had become "routine."

also be aware that lithium, as a mood stabelizer, is also used for a multitude of mental illnesses including schizophrenia and schizoeffective bahavior.

i hope that this helps you.  i admire your caring and your courage.

Hi Warren,
My sister suffers from manic, bp and depression.
My sister's med doctor prescribed the lithium. I just feel she doesn't care anymore
about my sisters well being. I love my sister and want her to be happy again.

Thanks so much for you response :-)

donna,

based upon my experience, i would suggest that you get your sister to a psychiatrist - preferably one with experience in diagnosing and dealing with bp.  bp is best treated with drugs, like lithium and welbutrin, and with talk therapy.  this combination seems to work better than any one by itself.  i also recommend the medmd website - i've gotten a lot of useful information from them.  there is also a website strictly for bp - i don't remember what is is, though.  memory is the first thing to go.  :-)

i may seem to be being cruel when i say this, but for me reality is better than not knowing, guessing, or being lied to.  reality i can cope with.  from what i've learned, "happy" is not an operative word for people with bp.  "stable" is much more appropriate.  your sister will never get "well" from bp; but bp is VERY manageable with the right combination of meds and therapy.

i wish you and your sister well.  keep us posted on her progress.

Thanks so much Warren for all your information. Her med doctor decided to
put her back on topamax along with the lithium and it seems to already helped her get to a more stable
place with her bp. Thank goodness. I just don't like to or anyone with the
disease suffer. I suffer from depression also so I know how difficult it can be
to cope with.
She does see a psychiatrist, sorry I didn't mention that.
I wish you well also. Thanks again for all your imput. :-)
