I just got diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. My doctor said he was not sure if it was I or II. What is the difference between these two forms of Bipolar?

I was diagnosed with Bipolar II or Cyclomythia in early December 2003. Bipolar I is also known as Manic Depression. This is an illness that will either leave you in a very high mood, like you can do anything or in a very depressed mood, suicidal even. It can be difficult to control and can cause great difficulty in one's life. Bi Polar II is a milder form, where you still have those cycles but they are not so pronounced. That's my simpleton explanation. Please research this site for a more clear explanation. It is very helpful. Be prepared though, when I read some of the symptoms and traits of these diseases, it scared me to death. Just remember, it is a disease you did not ask for. It can be managed and you will see better days. I am surprised that your doctor didn't make the distinction between the two dx's. Are you seeing a psychiatrist or someone else? In these type of issues, seek out a specialist. I have struggled with this disease for years but was never diagmosed until I saw a psychiatrist at the recommendation of my therapist.

I am taking depakote as a mood stabilizer and wellbutrin for my depression. I think it is helping. It has helped to even out how I feel at least. I was in a very depressed state and felt like I wasn't going to be able to cope any longer. Since then, things are better and I am facing some demons that have haunted me for years. These are baby steps for me. The long road awaits.

Can you share more of your history, what has been happening with you and why you were diagnosed. I am no expert but I have found that as I share with the people here, I get great feedback and feel like I have some soulmates that know what I am talking about. This is the place to come where you can be yourself and no one will ever judge you.

All the best to you,
