I was prescribed Zyprexa 5mg/ day and 10mg at night, in conjunction with 225mg of Effexor. The Zyprexa absolutely knocked me down. My thoughts were clear but I was a zombie, falling asleep sitting up and sleeping for 15 hours straight. I tried taking it for a few days and when I stopped because I couldn't deal with the tiredness, I was so irritable and aggitated it took everything in my power not to completely flip-out. I am a smoker and I felt like when you cannot have one, but want one really  badly and are horrible to be near. I am seeing my Doc tomorrow to speak of this. I do not want any of the anti-psychotic meds because I think the side effects are too scary. Has anyone had luck with any other meds. I am really interested in looking into taking my reg. anti-dep drugs and the other meds as needed in conjuction with cognitive behavioural therapy. Has anyone had success with anything like this. I am really new to this whole idea of BP and really flipping out. PLEASE respond.

Newbie,

Welcome to the HW family, I am glad you found us. I hope you find the support you are looking for here.

I took Zyprexa for about a month in the past. It worked for my mixed-state I was in, but it also made me sleep 14-16 hrs a night. So I completely understand how you feel. I don't know how anything got done, but somehow they did.

It is good that you are going to see you Dr. tomorrow, so at least you can bring up the issue with him. Best wishes on your meds.

Hi Newbie:

I think it depends upon your BP and chemistry, but a bunch of us don't need the anti-psychs, we can do okay with just mood-stabilizers and anti-deps. But I'm BP II -- that may make a difference. Hope your appt went well. Let us know. I'm all about cognitive therapy, by the way. I think that regardless of the drugs, my therapy is what actually keeps me functioning.
