Hi everyone,

Has anyone ever had vertigo? Was it because of meds or something else? How long did it take to go away? I've had to leave work twice now because my head gets spinning so bad I feel sick.

Hey serafena,

Hope you are well.  I had vertigo two weeks ago.  The doctors wouldn't say really what it was from for sure, but that day I had to go to the emergency room it was so bad.  And they did find out I had a bladder infection.  I am positive this was not from meds for me.  If I were you hun,  I would make an appointment with a physician right away.

I hope you feel better, I didn't not like that vertigo feeling at all.

Thanks mogs.

I've had a few bouts of it now over the past month and a half or so. After one particularly bad patch lasted for three days, I did go see my GP. He diagnosed an inner ear virus and gave me an antihistamine to help with the dizziness. Then, for 2 weeks, nothing. Three days ago, I had another bout of it, not as dramatic, but still very unpleasant. The medication did nothing. Again I had to leave work. (I work in a bookstore -- it's all on my feet, walking around, helping people, bending and reaching. Moving books around on shelves. It makes me ill. I keep feeling like I'm going to tip over.)

I did ask my psych today. She thinks my GP's assessment sounds the most plausable, and doesn't believe it's related to my meds. Her take was that it would come and go over time, much as a healing wound will itch sometimes more than others as it heals, and that as long as it continues to get better and not worse, things should be okay. I guess I had just thought it was gone and then when it came back it freaked me out. She said it would take more than a few weeks to heal, especially some place delicate like the inner ear. How did a virus get in there in the first place?!?

One guy I worked with said he'd had vertigo for over 2 years! He had to take medicine, and had little rocks in those tubes that eventually ruined the use of his inner ear. He doesn't keep his balance with his ears now, but with his vision, he said. I couldn't help but go "Ach! 2 years!!!!"

I hope your bladder infection is clearing up. I've had so many of those and they suck. Gotta ask -- it's my duty as a member of the mother club -- are you drinking cranberry juice, young lady? Feel better,

My mom has something called Meniere’s Disease. She has found a treatment having to do with the calcium crystals in the ear popping out of place, so when she does this certain exercise it can sometimes help. She had to be taught how to do it by a doctor; it is a little more involved than some you can find on line. If it keeps coming back, maybe it is possible it is connected to this verses and infection? The calcium crystals are like grains of sand and when they fall out of the inner ear cup they sit in, it can cause this until they find their way back into place. My mom has been hospitalized with it for up to 10 days. If she even moves her head the slightest bit or opens her eyes, the room spins. It is TRULY miserable to go through. Good luck to finding the answers. LFW

I've heard of Meniere's Disease. Of course I'd never heard of it before this began, and suddenly people have horror stories. Someone told me there was also a treatment for the disease which involved strapping the patient to a movable table and repositioning them all day to move the crystals through the canals. Oh -- sounds so awful...

The worst I've had the vertigo was a far milder version of your mom's. I also couldn't move or have anyone touch me, and moving my eyes was nauseating. I was sitting still on the couch and watching tv, but if I tried to look to the left or right, I felt ill. Yuck. I was like that for a day and a half, and then it started improving. Since then, it's repeated, but more benignly. (is that a word?)

My mom's exercises are not being strapped to a table. She just goes through a series of movements in a pattern that she has been taught to do. The other sounds horrible! Try looking into the kind of thing my mom does. Maybe that would help you. LFW

Mogli, cranberry juice helps flush out the urinary tract for infections. It will help you feel better. Try drinking the non-sugared ones. I know they are tart, but you can dilute them with water. Did the dr. also give you antibiotics? Hope your feeling better soon. LFW

See mogli -- LFW knew -- She's somebody's mom. It's in the handbook.

:)

If only there were a handbook. (Sigh). A

I'd actually been told about the cranberry juice by a doctor years ago. I believe it works. Whenever I've felt the first "tingles" I start with the cranberry juice. I think it helps.

I can't believe we're talking about this. Sorry guys.

*Laughs*.

Good Morning Serafena,

I'm just checking up on you. How are you feeling? Has your inner ear virus gotten any better? Have you had any relief yet? Hope so. If not maybe you should call your doctor and ask how long it takes for the med to kick in because you're not feeling any relief yet. See if he wants you back in or possibly try a new med.

Keep us posted! Have a good day. cool

Thanks serafena & LFW for your advice with my bladder infection.  I did get some cranberry juice (100%) yesterday.  And I am drinking as much water as I can.  I am on anti-biotics (for the second time in 3 weeks for this thing).  So hopefully with all that I am doing and with the medicine I will kick this thing and this time it won't come back.

I've never had a bladder infection before, and yep, it has sucked, a lot.

My vertigo symptoms haven't been back since Thursday, I felt a bit dizzy yesterday, but it went away.

Serafena, I hope you are feeling better.  I'm worried...this vertigo stuff really scares me, so I know how you must be feeling.

Mogs, I suggested the water to dilute the taste of the cranberry juice.  if it is 100 pure, it can be very tart.  Make sure you drink a lot of BOTH!  That should cleans out your system.  And YES, I read it in the mommy 101 handbook!  LOL  LFW

Thank you all. I'm doing fine this week. I had an epiphany at work yesterday. I noticed a few weeks ago that it always seems to get worse when I'm working. So I'd be fine when I'd go into work, and then three hours later I'd be tipping over.

Yesterday I realized why. We are getting a lot of guff from the management about not shelving fast enough, so I was working really fast, moving books from the mobile library carts where they're stacked in the stock room to the bookshelves on the store floor. And I'd spin around, grab books from the cart behind me, spin back, shelve books, spin back, grab books... You get the picture. So even though I must be healing, I think I was unconsciously making it worse. I realized this when I started to do it yesterday and immediately felt a jolt of dizziness. A light went on. A real "well, duh!" moment. So I slowed down and did what I needed to do to keep from getting dizzy and sick. I realized I might get yelled at for not shelving enough, but tough. My health has to come first.

Hope the bladder infection clears up soon, mogli. yucky.

I'm glad to hear you're feeling better. I'm glad you found some adjustments to make to help you along. Definately, your health comes first. So if you're not up to speed for them just clue them in on what has been happening to you.

You said your GP said it was an inner ear virus and gave you a antihistamine. You said it helped for a while and then your symptoms came back.

Continue to keep an eye on yourself. If it continues to happen, document when, where and how and go back to the doctor.  My personal opinion is that this shouldn't continue to  happen over time without an explanation or treatment plan. There could be other reasons for this happening to you. You just don't compromise to live with it.

Keep us posted on how it continues to play out for you.

Hope it goes completely away as your inner ear virus gets better...but in my opinion you have continued to have this problem for a while now and I would get back to the doctor to get it resolved.

Take care.

Thank you, sukay. My thoughts exactly. He told me to come back for a check up in 6 weeks when I saw him about 3 weeks ago. But if I have another serious bout in the next week or so, I'm gonna call him. I want it to move along faster...

serafena,

Glad you've eased off a bit at work.  Thanks for your well wishes for me as well, was feeling a bit better today, now, feeling kinda exhausted again.

I hope your doc can help you.  I don't want anything to get worse for you.  Take care :-)

There is a section on the emedicinehealth website about self care at home for urinary tract infections. They say to see doctor, take pain meds (ibuprofen or tylenol), use a heating pad and drink cranberry juice. These are all things that I have done in the past for this condition. Also there is an over the counter med that I can't remember the name of, it turns your urine orange but it helps to ease the pain and maybe? the infection. Additionally I've experienced vertigo because of the high doses of seroquel I take to ease anxiety and jitters from lamictal, but it doesn't sound like this has anything to do with your problem.

Thank you Olivia. I had a horrible day on Tuesday, but that was entirely because I went to the optometrist for a checkup in the morning. All those virtual tests on the machines -- my head was spinning before I left the office. By evening I had to just lie on the couch with my eyes closed. But it was gone the next morning and now I'm fine. I'm flummoxed. Everyone keeps telling me to call the doctor, but you can't rush or medicate a virus, so what's the point? Thanks for asking, though.
