I just want to introduce myself to this forum. I'm Thys and have been in treatment for bipolar II, anxiety and panic attacks for over ten years. I see a psychologist for therapy and a psychiatrist for therapy/meds. Currently starting new relationships with these doctors. I thought joining a forum like this could be helpful and re-inforcing in my journey to get better. My meds by the way include Zyprexa, Topomax and Xanax.

Do you find Xanax works? What dosage are you taking?

The Xanax dosage is 1mg. I take two in the morning and one in the afternoon. Xanax takes the edge off of my general anxiety. It is unclear how helpful it is for panic attacks. And I'd  posit that it may help establish a ceiling on the manic side of my mood swings. Not sure yet.

Hi Thys, Hi Jaim, I don't often get to welcome two new members in one message, but welcome to the board. I hope your find some company and comfort here. Seems like you're already getting the jist of it. :-)

Starting off with two new docs at once is a lot, Thys -- I don't envy you that. I hope that helps you, though. Better to have support than not, certainly.

Serafina-- it is, as you wrote, a lot to start two new doctors at once. I really appreciate you acknowledging that. I really needed to "jumpstart" my therapy again becuuse I'd been worn down by this longstanding condition and wasn't getting effective treatment at all. And my experience has been that without treatment things just get worse. So, though hard and sobering, I am back into treatment with both feet so to speak.

Thanks for the welcome Casem. Question-- can you attribute any benefits directly to the Topomax?

First, I should clarify...I have not been diagnosed with bp. At this time, I am taking topamax for anxiety, although it definitely is prescribed as a mood stabilizer and there are others on this site who are taking it. And...I am feeling a bit more stable, but it may be too early to tell as I have just reached my target dosage. I initially started at 100 mg @ night for a coupel of weeks, and then gradually increased to 100 mg/morning and 100 mg/night over the course of the last few weeks. My appetite has decreased and I do feel more stable. I am also taking 1 mg xanax/day for my anxiety.

Thys -- no worries about the misspell. :-)

I'm on Topomax too. Pdoc says it's a mood stabilizer with fewer anti-depressant qualities than lamictal. Which I'd say is true. It seems very neutral. Almost "quiet." I feel like it's not doing much. She's got me on piles of it right now to life me out of a mixed episode which came on while I've been on Lamictal and Effexor. (Whoops: too much anti-d's. Since when was that a bad idea?)

Incidentally, my pdoc has this theory that about 2-2 1/2 years after having a baby, many bp women's chemistry's change. Anyone else's experience echo that?
