Im on this right now, it's been 5 days.  Any idea how long it takes to kick in?  I was in the hospital for suicidal thoughts/depression/anxiety etc.  Thanks.

sophie,

I have never been on Depakote, but I have heard it takes about 14 days for maximum concentration and for your body to get used to having it in your system. Depakote might work for your anxiety, but it is usually used to treat mania or to keep your moods from getting too high. (Symptoms that one can be experiencing to be on Depakote are irritability, impulsiveness, poor judgement, aggressiveness, and possible hostility - which is probably the reason it is prescribed to you) It usually takes a little time for meds to kick in, especially mood stabilizers and anti depressants. I don't think it is designed to work on depression, so I would talk to your doc ASAP if you do not feel better soon.

Here is a link to a site about Depakote: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/dival.htm

It has a lot of information about the med, and I hope you find it helpful.

Sophie,

I was Depakote and it took time for it to get into my system, plus we had to play around with it for a while to find the right dosage for me. It worked well for me, but I was also on an antidepressant and another med for my anxiety issues as well.

If things are becoming hard for you to tolerate before your next scheduled visit with the doctor, you can always call the office and let them know that you need to see the doctor sooner.

Good Luck.
