I was just informed that my Breast MRI came back showing enhancement of the nipple area. Now they want to do a punch biopsy on the 21st. Can anyone tell me more about this? Is it very painful? Will he numb me first? My left nipple is very sore already. Can't imagine anything being poked into it. Thank you in advance for any advise or calming of my nerves you can offer. Originally, I had left nipple flaking, pain, swelling and some discharge. I was put on Augmentin, as they thought I had Mastitus. Since a 10 day course of the antibiotic did not clear it up, I had a mammogram which came back normal. My Dr. then ordered this breast MRI w/ contrast, that I had 3 days ago. I am 51.~Kate

Hi, Katie. I think that a punch biopsy is the preferred method for the nipple and areola areas, as well as for the skin of the breast. Mammograms and MRI's are not very effective for cancers of the breast that do not involve lumps or masses. These would include Paget's and IBC, which is probably what they are looking to rule out. They have demonstrations of various biopsies, including punch biopsies on You Tube, if you want to know exactly how one is done. They can also be used to check for infection. Please let us know know how it goes.

Hi again, had the biopsy yesterday and was told to keep dressing on for 2 days. I have alot of drainage, almost saturated my dressing. So am gonna call Dr. this morning when office opens to see what they think I should do. My nipple is throbbing terribly. He told me yesterday, after it was done, he will have me back in his office Feb2, to go over results and remove sutures.

He did 3 core biopsy's of my left nipple. The worst was the needle going in to numb the area...I about flew off the cart! But the good news is, it only lasted seconds, then no pain at all...till no anyway. Now the wait, which is about as un-nerving as the anxiety I had going into the procedure.

Wondered if all this drainage is normal, has anyone else had that? I am going to try ice for the pain right now, so gotta run. Hugs~Kate

I've never had a punch biopsy, but that sounds like a lot of drainage. I would put a call in to the office to see if they want you to change the dressings to dry ones. Waiting for answers is the hard part, you are right. Are they to call you with the results when they get them? Waiting til February 2... that is a long wait!

Hope the ice helps the pain.

I did end up having to change the dressing and ice is helping. My DR. told me today, he will call me if anything 'bad' shows on the biopsy, and said he wont get results till someday next week. He said I had a core biopsy...same as punch I think? I didnt ask except to ask exactly what kind I had. For some reason, the first time I saw him, I thought he said punch, but maybe I was wrong, or they are the same?
Thank you for responding and I will keep the board updated to what they find out, your right the waiting is the worst part of this.
