I am 33 and African American living with Lupus SLE and Breast Cancer. I started developing and menstruating at the age of 9. My periods have always been very short and painful. I gave birth at an early age ( 19 years old) . I am glad that I did because when my husband and I tried again at the age of 25 I was diagnosed with Lupus SLE and could not have children. My Lupus is pretty server , with facial and bodily rashes , extreme sensitivity to the sun,. bone and joint pain, mouth sores, migraines, lung, kidney and intestinal problems. I also have chronic low white blood cell count as well as anemia. I have been hospitalized once a year for the last 3 years due to these issues. October of 2009 I was diagnosed with Invasive Ductile Cancer in the left breast.By the time I went in to surgery the tumor doubled in size. I opted for a double mastectomy with no reconstruction. I have had 4 rounds of Adriamycin and Cytoxan one round once every 3 weeks. Now I am on my third treatment of Taxol once a week for 12 weeks. I have to take the Neupogen shots to build up my white blood cell count throughout my treatment. I am tolerating things ok,I guess. I wanted to reach out to anyone going through the same issue and hear how your treatment is going or how it went for support.

I just stopped by and saw your post. Wow, you have a lot going on. You are on the treatment program I was on -- 4 AC and 12 weekly Taxol. I also had 35 rads. I am much older than you, but I did very well as I am sure you will. It was about this time in my treatment when I decided that this disease will not define my life and it seems you are close to that realization also.

Keep working at this, stay as positive as you can and know that there are strong women here who will help as well as listen. Come back to vent, ask questions and to help others who are newly diagnosed.

Stay Positive!

I am 26, African American and have SLE. I have been having some breast issues recently. May I ask what your experience was like during the diagnosing process? Such as symptoms, etc. I know it is personal but I am struggling and Internet research is making me a little paranoid. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I just read your posting and i am so sorry to hear about all you are going through. I had Stage I breast cancer and suffer FM. I have a very good friend of mine who is only 26 years old and she has Lupus. She was hospitalized in August of 2010 and almost lost her life. She was in remission for 10 years, but thank God she is much better now. Is there a reason why you decided to not do reconstruction surgery? is it because your body will not be able to handle due to SLE? I am just curious because I know that this is a tough decisioon to make. I also know of someone who was diagnosed with MS at the age of 19 and then later in life breast cancer. She opted out of reconstruction surgery because the doctors recommended that her body will not be able to handle it due to her MS. My thoughts and prayers are with you. keep up in touch with your progress. I am glad you are in this forum.
