We spent one afternoon in the doctor's office and two very long nights in the ER at Children's Hospital with my grandbaby this week.  How difficult is it, really, to diagnose pneumonia?  It used to be all a doctor needed was a stethoscope.  I won't tell you how many urine samples they had us take.  And believe me, it ain't easy getting a "clean catch" urine sample from a 3-year-old who is sick, dehydrated, and running a 104 temp.

Thank God-0r-Whoever-is-in-Charge that it wasn't any of the more serious things that they had us worried about, like liver or kidney failure.

Yes, what is it with Dr's saying it is not bad for a child to run a temp like that?  Several of the people I work with have small children who have been fighting this creeping crud that is making it's way around and they all get a high temp - 103 to 104 and the Dr's just say to make sure they drink plenty of fluid (yeah when they aren't pucking it up) and they get rest.  These poor kids are coughing their lungs up till they throw up.

Guess the hospitals are so full of patients they feel ones like these are still better off at home, like you said, until they dehydrate.  Did your grandbaby end up in the hospital, or did they just give antibiotics and send a child with pneumonia home to get better?

Hang in there - spring is around the corner.

Love, Kitty

My granddaughters have each had this crud that is going around this week. High temps (105) cough, body aches, etc. When my dd called the dr she was told just what you have said. Don't worry. Excuseeeeee meeeeee. The kids are barking like seals and coughing. Having problems breathing. Thank heavens I have a personal friend that is a dr. She immediately got a breathing machine for treatments, antibotics for pneumonia. I have to agree that it doesn't take a rocket scientest to know if a child has pneumonia. And we wonder why our insurance costs are so high. Too many unnecessary tests!

Hope that your grandbaby is ok by now.

Deb

PS...One dr told us to use steam to help break up the cough and another said cold air. My friend said that if one didn't work, try the other. Sure was easier 29 yrs ago.

for me it would be time to get a new doctor.  Jordan had 102 to 103 temp two weeks ago.  Went in and was diagnosed with an ear infection.  Which was not what I was expecting to hear but within two days she was back to herself.

I am seriously considering getting all my medical records and going to a good Vet. I have thought about this and regular MD's pay no attention to anything you say. Now I know if they can ignore my mouth there are a lot of people out there that really have no shot. My Vet would look at my dog and get it right and the dog never had to say a word. I have no idea how that works but it does. I have had three dogs and not once did they get it wrong. Can I say that about my doctors? Remember my bursitis, I had to fight for months to get the right test, and it turned into a 5 cm tumor. Yep I say we all give Vets a shot. Might give these doctors the idea that they need to start getting it right with out twenty or more consultations with specialists to decide you have a hang nail. Ps. Its not easy to talk with my tongue in cheek. I just feel so sorry for the little guys. L&H Joyce

Well, Joyce...I agree with you. Wish my vet would treat my family, too! However...I must say that his bills are almost as high as the doctors!!! Not really, but with three dogs...and my last baby had autoimmune problems from too much inbreeding, so we spent a LOT of time and money at the vet! Dr. Smith knows that I fully expect any future addition to their building be named for us, as I'm sure we have funded it!

But back to my baby. We were not admitted, but we did get antibiotics and some iv fluids, and today she is feeling finer than frog hair and getting ready to go see Dora the Explorer Live.

I'm still trying to recover from lack of sleep!

Love and hugs...

I can't believe all this horror for a child!!!! THERE IS something to say for the good old days. I remember once when my daughter had a very high temp the doctor actually came to the house and treated her, she had a convulsion from high fever. Phenobarb took care of that and alcohol baths took care of the fever. This would have been about 1961, before many of you were born. LOL. I agree about the vets, too. My little Heidi has congestive heart failure and the vet has been so compassionate about her. I was ready to give up and have her put down, but he said no her heart beat is still strong. They seem to care more about their four legged patients than regular doctors do for the two legged variety..... Hope the little ones are all on the road to recovery. Hugs MK

Kind of funny story related to the vets...We have moved from here and yon and back again many times over...I've actually lost count of the homes we have bought and sold!  But I've seen most of the U.S. by moving, I can tell you that!

I always said that I wished it were as easy to find a pediatrician as it is to find a vet.  Vets go into their line of business because they love animals.  Not so with pediatricians, or so has been my experience.

One day my four year old refused to take off her dress so the pediatrician could do her annual physical.  She fought like a little banshee, (hmmm...where have I heard that word used before?) and the doctor looked at me and said, "Well, we're just going to have to show her who's in charge here!"  I gave him one of those looks that only a livid mom can give and told him, "I think it's perfectly obvious who is in charge here."  I picked up my child, left that office without so much as a backward glance, and never went back.  Had she been sick and NEEDED an exam, it might have been different!

I certainly hope that man got out of the kid business.

Love and hugs...

LOL Love it Bev! I can see you marching out of that office, those beautiful blue eyes flashing in anger. Thanks for the chuckle. Hugs MK
