We have talked about ports but I think that one thing that we have neglected to say is that you should never let anyone that has not been trained as a chemo nurse, access your port. If you are in you pp office or the er, don't let them use the port unless they have been properly trained. Don't be afraid to ask. It is much better than the consequences that you might suffer. If they are not trained, and you want your port used, then request a chemo nurse. There is usually one in the hopsital on each shift. But, if there is no one available, then use the veins, NOT your port.

A good warning, Deb. I have had my port for 9 1/2 years and I have always asked if someone knows how to use it. Also, don't let just anyone take it out. I needed some dyes for a scan and the nurses at the hospital couldn't do it. I walked over to my onc's office and they accessed it for me.

After the test, the hospital nurse tried to take it out, straight out. It was obvious she didn't know what she was doing, so I went back to the onc. And that port has to be flushed after access.

Hugs, Jo-Ann

Hi Ladies

I love my port and you can be sure I make sure they know what
they are doing...when I was in the ER last week I made sure I
had a nurse who has dealt with ports and knew what she was doing.
To tell you the truth mine, is accessed so often I could probably do it
