I've read posts from you all about mets. Can someone tell me what they are? Is it something that can spread from the breast cancer? I just don't know sad

There are no stupid questions and this certainly is not one. Yes, mets stand for metastasis which is the spreading of breast cancer through the body. Breast cancer is a particular kind of cancer and if it spreads to other parts of the body, it is still breast cancer not the kind of cancer which would be primary to that would be found in that area. Brain mets is breast cancer that is in the brain as opposed to a primary brain cancer. We have had sisters with about all kinds of mets. Bone, Lung, Brain, I think have been the most common. The removal of lymph nodes tells the doctors if your cancer has spread to the lymphatic system and the staging is done from this test and others from the pathology report. Hugs, MK

The liver is common, too, but it can spread to other sites, as well.

Good question and good answers. Those of us that have been around a long time tend to talk and write in shorthand, sometimes forgetting that not everyone knows the language. Thanks for reminding us to be clearer and more thorough. Hugs, Lauri

Just to make things clear as mud..... Cancer in a new location does not mean its mets. My SIL had cancer in the right breast and six years later had it in the left breast. The left breast was what they call a different occurance. She did not have mets. Now I bet your happy I added that to the confusion. Hugs Joyce
How wonderful it would be to see Angels where there are only clouds. How sad it would be to see clouds where there are Angels.

Ah, to be unfamiliar with the language of cancer. Sounds like a wonderful thing. I've been hearing all those stinking words for almost as long as I can remember. Katt and Tammy, I'm so sorry you have to add them to your vocabularies, but there are no stupid questions here. That's one of the nice things about these boards...you can arm yourself with information so you can ask intelligent questions when you see your doctors.

I wish such a thing had been available to me when I was first diagnosed.

Love and hugs...

What Joyce says is very true. You can have more than one "Primary" cancers. You can even have more than one kinds of "breast cancer" in your breasts. That's why it is important to always have a biopsy and a pathology study done. And you can learn something new about cancer every day. However, I must say the TV news sometimes gives me a good chuckle when they say what can cure or cause cancer. Hugs MK
