Good morning.  This is my first time to post here.  Last Thursday they found a mass in my breast.  The radiologist said it is not a cyst and needs a biopsy.  I'm still waiting to hear from my family physician and to get a referrel for the biopsy.  My question is this:  Will any surgeon be able to do the biopsy or should I request an onocologist?
I've been reading the forum and the strength and courage I see here is almost overwhelming.  I'm so glad to have found this place today.  Everyone here will be in my prayers.

Welcome CandleGlo, I am happy you found this board! It is full of wonderful friends who will help you and hold your hand if needed. I hope you don't need to be here, but if you do it is a great place to ask questions and have people to talk to that truly understand.
I had a general surgeon do my biopsy. If fact he also did the mastectomies. I would imagine it would depend on what your family Dr thinks. Please stay with us and let us know how everything goes. I know you are probably nervous and worried right now, so let us help you. If you have any other questions feel free to ask!
We are here for you sweetie!
Hugs, Gail

Welcome to the board.  I hope you do not have to stay long, but like Gail said, if you do, it is a great place for support and knowledge.

I had a general surgeon do the biopsy lumpectomy and then he continue through with the mast. and I continue to see him every six months for check-ups.  I was not referred to an oncologist until I was actually dx. with breast cancer.

So please stay with us and we will wait with you.

Thank you for your responses and so quickly.  I appreciate it so much.  I'm very scared, as I am sure everyone that ever comes to this board is.  This waiting is horrible.
Hugs to you both... thank you,

Just wanted to add my welcome and say I hope you don't have to stay with us.  But, if you do, it's a great place to be.  We will hold your hand every step of the way.
I also had a general surgeon do the biopsy, lumpectomy and mastectomy.  Oncologists don't usually do surgery.  They treat the cancer before or after the surgery.
Let us know the results.  Hoping for B9!!!

I want to add my welcome to you! Like the other gals have said, I also had a general surgeon that did my biopsy as well as my mastectomy. In fact, I still see my surgeon 1x a yr for a checkup. She works very closely w/ my onco and my family physician.

Try and stay as busy as you can. This helps the time pass quickly. Watch shows/movies that will make you laugh. Laughter is a great stress release.

One other thing. Write down any questions that you have for the surgeon. When you go to your initial appt, if you don't like him/her, then walk out and find another one. You have time. The first surgeon that I consulted was very arrogant and I knew immediately that we would not get along. I called another surgeon and w/in a week saw her and knew it was a right match. You have to have total trust and faith in your medical team.

We are here to hold your hand and help you thru these next few weeks. Come and post anytime. There is usually someone around, night and day.
