I just got results today that my utlrasound and compressed mamogram indicate I am a Birad 4. (Just found lump on Wednesday by self exam - it is approximately 1 1/2 centimeters with irregular borders and hypervascularity. I am 53 years old and had never had a mamogram before this, stupid me!) I am supposed to make a trip Monday morning and be gone until Tuesday the 31st. My primary ob-gyn can't tell me how long it will take to get an appointment to do the biopsy, said it might be a week to 10 days, but on the other hand she might be able to get me in if there is a cancellation in a couple of days. Should I take this trip and tell her to try and schedule me for the 31st, or wait here to see if I can get in earlier?

A second question is, I have been asking around and according to other doctors I know and breast cancer patients, one doctor comes up unanimously. She is not a physician in my HMO, but she is a breast specialist physician. My husband is on a PPO owned by the same company and she is on their list. How hard would it be (and how long would it take) to get switched to my husband's plan? These are personal plans, not company plans as we are both self employed. I am certainly willing to pay a higher premium and copay to get the services of the best one around. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

I think you could go ahead and make your trip. A few days is not going to make that much difference. Schedule the biopsy for when you get back. Once you have it done then you will have time to make any arrangements you might need to make amd you might be more relaxed to make them. DON'T fret and worry about the biopsy while you are gone, there could be no reason for worry so why waste time worrying?

I have no idea about the insurance, but I am hoping and guessing that because it is the same company perhaps you will have no trouble getting it changed to your husband's plan. PPOs are usually higher in cost and I would think that would be in your favor rather than the opposite scenario.

Let us know what happens. We will help all we can. Be sure to get copies of all your path reports and mammo reports to keep in your own files. It will lbe helpful in the future even if this turns out to be benign. You aren't the first 53 year old to wait for a mammogram so don't beat yourself up over it, but be sure to share your story and urge your friends to go for theirs.

Hugs and best wishes, MK (Mary K.)

Thanks Mary K,

I am hoping also that because it is higher in cost for me and they are going to have to pay anyway as it is the same company, that they will allow me to upgrade and switch over, though my insurance agent does not seem think that will be the case. But if the results of the biopsy are positive, I am going to see if I can make arrangements to pay the referred doctor out of my own pocket if I can at all afford it.

And I am going to go on my trip - I have advised my doctor to try and schedule me for the biopsy the day after I get back - hopefully she can. In the mean time I am going to do a lot of praying and I will certainly share my story, no doubt about that! It's most amazing to me that after all the horror stories people told me about mamograms, it was a piece of cake. Not even uncomfortable as far as I was concerned.

Thanks for the advice on keeping reports. I have started a file (in a pink file folder!) I will let you know what happens. I have been a huge booster of the Sunshine Kids for a number of years. Never thought that I might need a support group myself though. Guess you never imagine it could happen to you. And I feel perfectly fine and as full of energy as ever. I am just going to try and keep myself as busy as possible until I learn one way or another what is going on.

Are there any special diets or anything else that helps prevent/control cancer that I should be looking into?

You might check on exclusions on pre-existing conditions before you change insurance. And, since you have consulted with a doctor there is a record that you have a pre-existing condition whether it is cancer or not. I agree with MK. Take the trip and deal with biopsies and insurance issues when you get back. Welcome to the board. Hope you stay will be short. Hugs, Lauri

From what I have been hearing today Lauri, you are right on about the pre-existing stuff. There is a lot to learn.

And I too hope my reason for staying is actually non existent. :-)

But I think no matter which way things turn out I am going to hang around this board for a while if that's okay. I lost three people I loved dearly, my mom-in-law, my father-in-law and my step-mom, to cancer all within a few months of each other. It was so sudden and all three were gone so quickly we never dealt with the long term side of cancer. And raising money for a cause like the Sunshine Kids is wonderful, but somehow it just doesn't hit home nearly like this does.

I am so impressed by the stories and courage and humor on this forum. It seems to me like the best of the best come here to encourage each other on and offer advice and love. What a comfort and inspiration these women all are to those like me who feel like suddenly they've been thrown under a bus and are wondering how to get back up on the curb.

Thank you, Lauri, and thank you, Mary K, for sharing and caring. Hugs back at you both too!

Have you checked out the Roll Call at the beginning of the board? There are actually some pictures of us when we met so you can put faces with names. We do have some wonderful women here. Some of us have been hanging together for nearly eight years.

I thought of pre existing conditions but since it was the same company, I thought perhaps it wouldn't matter as much. I will be interested in knowing the details of the insurance deal.

Incidently, when I was called back for a second mammo I had a business trip to Vegas of all places and had to delay getting it done when I got back. That was ten years ago this month.

Yes, I did check out the pictures - looks like you guys had a great time! So did anyone make a fortune at the track? LOL

Have you been back to Vegas since then, MK?

I will let you know what the insurance agent finds out. He seems to think I won't be able to change either. Doesn't seem to make sense, but we'll find out. I am just going to try and go on the trip and enjoy myself as much as possible. I am meeting my childhood friends - we get together every other year somewhere - in Asheville, NC to go watch the leaves and pretty much have a pajama party and pretend we are all 10 again. I haven't told any of them yet except my sister, but blabbermouth that she is, she will probably have told them all before I get there. Perhaps that will make it a bit easier anyway.
