Hi everyone, my name is Karen and i've been a member of hw since 04. I usually post on the crohns forum but have a few questions regarding some breast issues i'm having. I really hate to admit that i waited 10 years between mammo's and gyn visits due to the lack of insurance. I just recently got insurance that covers gyn visits so i made an appt. and my doctor had me to do a mammo while i was there. I got a call from my doctors office said they saw an area that need to be looked at better so she had me see a radiologist. I get to the radologist appt. and the girl does another mammo shows the doc he see's something so he has her do it again . I winded up having 3 mammo's and 2 ultrasounds. The radiologist said that i have a nodule under the right nipple and he'd send the report to my dr. office. My doctors office called and said the report showed that i also have enlarged ducts along with the nodule. Well yesterday i recieve a letter from the radioligst saying they want to see me again in 5 months to make sure the area is stable. My question is have any of you had this happen and if so what was the outcome. I'm trying really hard to not get worried but i just feel like i'm in limbo if you know what i mean. Thanks for letting me come here and vent a little. I have to say i have been lurking around and reading the post here you all seem to be such a wonderful group of ladies. thanks so much Karen.

Hi Karen-
Welcome to our corner of HW, sorry you are having issues now. My advice to you is listen to your instinct....you are right to not worry but you are more right to question the 5 mont wait. Keep in mind that most of us here were the ones with the BC and our stories are not like most, but knowing from the "what ifs" we are all going to suggest that you not wait and get another opinion. There is a very good chance that it is nothing, but it does not sound like anyone can be sure enough. My suggestion is to get a copy of all the mammo reports and u/s reports, not just the letter, and talk to your doctor. Then consider taking the reports plus the films (you can check them out or borrow them) to surgeon or breast specialist for further evaluation. 80% of lumps are benign, so odds are in your favor....but just in case, it is best to be sure.

Keep us posted-

I think Lori has already advised you what each one of us would say, so I won't repeat that. I am just going to suggest that the five month recall letter may have been sent by mistake at this time. Communication between various members of the medical team could have been garbled or a simple misunderstanding could have caused you to get the letter. Do not take it as a reason to wait. Surely you have a follow up appt with your doctor to discuss the report? See him/her first and go from there if you don't get satisfaction. BTW many cancer screenings can be done at free of charge clinics. Call your local American Cancer Society to get information and watch the news, especially during breast cancer months. Since you now have insurance you don't need this information possibly, but others reading the post could. Never, ever go so long without having your check up. Believe me the cost of a mammogram even if you have to pay will be far less than the alternative. Hugs MK

Biosy, biosy, biosy, it is the only way to make sure, and always get a second opinion.

When I found a small lump under my breast, the gyn doctor sent me right away for mammogram where they found something which led them to giving me ultrasound as well.  (The gyn doctor set an appointment for the surgeon for the next day as well)  The radiologist said "Let's check it in six months" and I'm so glad I didn't listen to him.  I am one of the ones who didn't fall into the 80% benign bracket and it turns out I have invasive lobular cancer and the surgeon was doing surgery to remove the lump within 5 days.  I've written about it some on my journel http://rubyshooz.wordpress.com  if you'd care to know more, but sometimes, just going to the doctors and insisting that they/we need to be more aggresive about finding out what the trouble is makes the most sense - that's how it's worked for me so far.  Wait and see when it comes to our breasts can be an awful experience.
Best wishes to you!

Thank you all for the advise i was going to wait the 5 months out but my mom went to the doctor and she now has an area they want to look at again. I really got to thinking about everything and still felt uneasy. I decided to call my ob doc back and told her i wanted a second opinion. I now have an appt june 25th with a breast specialist better to go on and ease my mind. Thanks again will post with my results soon as i know them. Kay
