I'm a newbie here. My GP found a breast lump in each of my breast during my annual check up recently and referred me for mammogram. My BIRADS result is category 4 - Supicious abnormality that reqires a biopsy. Even though my mammogram result suggests there's 80% chance that my lumps are benign, I'm still worry b/c my mom has breast cancer. Did anyone know any good breast surgeon in NYC that I can go to?

We have a good friend here that is from New York but now lives in Nevada. She has always loved her NY doctor, hopefully she will see this and give you a name. Her name is Lucy, so I hope she sees this. She actually travels from Nevada to NY sometimes just to see him when she has a problem.

Hi! Welcome to our board! I was treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (www.mskcc.org). The breast center is located at 205 64th St.  They have several great breast surgeons; I was treated by Alexandra Heerdt who was wonderful! I was in their breast surveillence program for high risk patients back in 2000 because my mom and sister both had bc. My bc was picked up on a screening MRI. You can go on their website for lots of info on breast cancer in general.  If you have specific questions, I'd be happy to help. Try not to worry yet. Most lumps (80%) turn out to be benign! It is good that you are checking this out.

Hello and Welcome:

I and one other woman on this site, Vicky, went to Beth Israel Medical Center's Breast Center.  The Director, Sheldon Feldman, MD was a wonderful, caring, knowledgeable breast surgeon.  When I first saw him, he did a needle biopsy and got the results that day because he was leaving for Japan the next day and wanted me to have an answer so I could make a decision to stick with him or go elsewhere because he was going to be gone for two weeks.  He said it shouldn't matter, the two weeks, that he's do the surgery the day after he got back, but that I should feel comfortable with making an informed decision.  I stuck with him and never regretted it.  His P.A. Deadre, is wonderful, too.  She really stays on top of things for you.

Good luck.

Thanks for all your prompt response. Both Alexandra Heerdt & Shedlon Feldman are not covered in my insurance. Do you gals happened to know how much does it cost for a biopsy? Or should I go to some other doctors for biopsy first and go back to Dr. Sheldon for consulation?
The breast surgeon that my insurance covered is Dr. Robert Reader (associated with NYU medical center). Anyone heard of him? Is he good?

Hi there-
I can't help specifically with your questions, but you may want to check to see if the facility is covered, rather than the individual doctor. You might check with the office or clinic and then double check your insurance. Sometimes it may be covered under the facility instead of the provider himself.

Good luck. And remember, you can always get a second opinion if you are not satisfied. I'd suggest sticking with the insurance plan at first, and if you can't find someone you like, then consider a change.

Keep us posted!

I think staying within your insurance at this point is a good idea. A biopsy can be done anywhere, and NYU is a great place. Once you know what you are dealing with, then there will be decisions to make. Hopefully, things will turn out just fine!

I'm in total agreement.  Let me share also that you might want to check that BOTH the doc and the hospital participate.  Feldman participated but Beth Israel Medical Center didn't for me.  It took a while, but it got straightened out.  You can get the biopsy anywhere, so I'd go in network for the biopsy and then get a team by getting a second opinion from someone else if you don't like who you have.  NYU is great.  I happen to be going to NYU Medical Center tomorrow as a matter of fact, for a pain conultation.  It's been highly recommended for that, and has a great reputation for medicine.

Thanks so much all of you!!! Guess I'll do the biopsy within my network first and consult Dr Feldman afterwards. Thanks to this forum, I am not feeling so scare and lonely anymore. I know it takes a lot of courage to fight against cancer since my mom had it too. The more support you gain, the stronger you are. U gals have my back and u're in my prayers =)
