Hi All,

I haven't been on here in a long time. I am glad that HealingWell is still around. This is now the second time I could use some support and advice. I was never officially diagnosed with Lyme/ CFS but definitely have some sort of underlying autoimmune disease that has never been fully diagnosed. In 2009 after the H1N1 flu out break I came down with a mild form of the flu that left me out of work for about a week or so. Within 2 weeks after getting it I developed autonomic nervous system disorders that left my life in a tail spin for a better part of 2 years. Everyday I was going to a specialist or a rheumatologist or something. After 2 years they unofficially diagnosed me with a form of Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia and upper GI issues. Well, in 2012 I went back to work at my old job and knock on wood I did fairly well for 4 years until I transferred to another location closer to my home. Within about 6 weeks of transferring I came down with the flu that is going around this year and I am now on day 18 of being incredibly sick. I came down with the flu on February 13th and was sick for 7 days then it seem to lift then 2 days later Im short of breath and my oxygen levels are down to 92 and I have full on bronchitis. I have been absolutely miserable and sick. I am now on my third antibiotic. Initially my doctor put me on Augmentin 875 for 10 days and it was like taking water, it didn't touch the bronchitis at all. I went back in and she gave me Levaquin 750 mg, I could only take 2 days of that because the side effects were terrible and it was leaving me incapacitated 30-40 min after I took it. Yesterday they put me on a z-pack. I took the 2 tablets this morning. Unfortunately I have to go to work because I have missed most of this week and a lot of days the last couple of weeks. I have a pulse oximeter and my oxygen levels wont go up above 93 no matter how many deep breathing exercises I do. I am constantly exhausted and just want to curl in a ball and sleep all day. My doctor told me this flu/bronchitis stuff is lasting anywhere from 30-60 days.. If that is true I am only on day 18 and honestly don't think I have it in me to last another month in a half with this stuff. The coughing alone wears you out and makes you feel terrible. I just wanted to know what others have experienced with being sick and how long it lasts and what are some things I can do to help manage being sick. Sorry this is so long, but it felt good to type and get some of this burden off my chest (since I can't get the bronchitis off) tongue

Hi nsearch, I saw your post & wanted to respond about the flu/bronchitis situation. My son got sick with what was termed a virus a week before Thanksgiving. Wasted office visit. Two weeks later he was so bad that he went to a walkin minor emergency clinic & they said bronchitis. Gave him an antibiotic & sent him on his happy way. He finished the antibiotic & still was not well. He finally got in with his regular dr & given another antibiotic, plus a a med to help with the breathing. I cannot recall the name, it is rx'd for people with breathing issues as a routine medicine. He was given a script for cough medicine & was told to start taking Mucinex D. I just remembered she did a breathing treatment on him while in the office. Also, consider getting a warm mist vaporizer, Vick's makes a really good one. It was nearly 2 months before he finally got well. This stuff can be just wicked to get rid of.

Take care of yourself & stay out of cold drafts.

Thanks for replying Susie,

I am glad your son is finally feeling better. Well I am on day 25. Luckily the coughing does not keep me up at night but now I have noticed I go into terrible coughing fits right before bed or as soon as the sun goes down. It seems to have all gone into my sinuses now and my nose wont stop running and I am now getting terrible sinus headaches. I probably have a sinus infection but do I really want to go on a 4th round of antibiotic? I am taking a multivitamin and a live culture probiotic to boost my immune system. It doesn't seem to be doing much good. I also cannot get over how absolutely exhausted I am and functioning day to day almost seems too much for me. The last week I have gone to work I am so exhausted and drained by 1-2 in the afternoon that I almost become physically ill. I come home and am too exhausted to make dinner or do laundry or anything else. I just crawl into bed. I have been getting anywhere from 9-10 hours of sleep but just seem like it isn't enough. Everyone thinks I should be over this by now. My boss made a comment about how I must have a really terrible immune system and compared me to another girl who was sick right around the same time but now she's all better. Talk about make you feel like crap. I explained to him that viruses mutate with each host and she could have just gotten a weaker strain and maybe her immune system is better than mine. It almost makes you feel jealous of "other people" and how they can get better quicker and faster than you so they must be stronger in some way. Also another thing I have noticed since I have been sick and I don't know if your son has felt the same way or not, but my tolerance to caffeine has gone way down. My husband and I only drink caffeinated coffee and this morning I got up and decided I was going to have 2 cups of coffee instead of my normal one. about 4 hours later I was sick, extremely dizzy and shaky that I almost passed out in the shower and thought for sure I was going to die. I also went into a 15 min coughing fit while I was feeling this way. I have been trying to relax and lay down and sip water. I feel a tiny bit better but it scared me pretty bad and I thought for a second I may have to call 911. I am hoping and praying that all of this goes away soon. I am afraid if this goes on much longer I will be missing more work and will lose my job or will have to go on short term disability until this virus resolves. I really don't know If i can make it another month being this sick. Is there anything else your son did to help him besides the over the counter meds and the humidifier? Thanks again for your rely Susie.

When I was getting bronchitis the doctor ask me if i smoked since bronchitis is consider a smokers disease. I didn't smoke so that wasn't the cause. If you have amalgam fillings mercury could be the problem. There is a list of conditions which can result for mercury poisoning. I got my fillings removed by a holistic dentist and haven't got bronchitis since then. I also experienced CFS but that is gone.

nsearch, he finished all of the medications he was given by the drs. He does take OTC allergy medicines, he actually rotates them monthly. We live in a part of the country that if you don't have allergy issues when you get here you will have them. The pollens are so bad because it rarely gets cold enough here to kill the stuff out. He continued with the vaporizer for quite some time. He finally got well but it was rough. Last week his allergies got really bad & he had a bad sore throat. He ended up seeing my pcp that he had treated with years ago. No strep or flu, a throat infection & of course sinus/allergy issues. He was put on a rather strong antibiotic & is feeling somewhat better.

I have never heard of bronchitis being called a smoker's disease. My son & his wife has never smoked a cigarette & both get it, no they do not have mercury fillings. I know a lot of people that get bronchitis that are non-smokers. My sister's neighbor was dx'd with COPD, which is a lung disease, this lady had never smoked in her life.

I hope you are feeling better by now. Take care.

Smoking is just one thing which can contribute to bronchitis. There are other things which effect the lungs which can cause bronchitis. My doctor didn't realize that breathing chemicals can result in bronchitis. I had too many amalgam fillings and breathing the mercury released from them gave me bronchitis and other problems. Guess if you work in a coal mine or a chemical factory that could be the problem. Important to breath clean air if you want healthy lungs.

Hi nsearch, Yes, i would hope you're a non smoker. I came down with something similar last
November. I was told it was a virus that was going around. I had the horrible cough but when I took
the prescription cough medicine with codene, it knocked me out enough to sleep at night and slow
down the cough. Then, I took some kind of expectorant that helped clear my head.
I would put hot wash cloths on my throat and chest with Vics vaporub put on underneath. Then,
I would put a heating pad over that to soothe my throat and lungs. It worked for me. I would also
run a steamer too at times. I drank lots of oj, hot tea and fluids all day.
In your situation, I'm wondering if
you can't get the doctor to give you some form of inhaler to use? Maybe before you feel a coughing
bout coming on. I know I was given one when I had pneumonia and it sounds like you have been
through so much, they should be able to supply you with one to bring relief.
Mine, took six to seven weeks to totally go away. I was miserable most of that time so I
feel for you and want to send you very warm wishes. I hope you gain some relief soon.

No I don't smoke and never have. I also don't have any fillings. My doctor is now looking at the possibility of Valley Fever. I live in the southwest and a ton of people have it here. I will find out for sure by next tuesday. Just so tired of being sick and exhausted.
