Hey,

Im not sure if this is in the right place, but I have been haveing stomach pains for over a year now. My Doctor is now sending me to get an ultrasound to check my gallbladder, but Im wondering if I am pregnant and they do the U/S will they be able to see the baby? Im asking this because Im under the age of 18 so my father will be with me, and if I am pregnant I do now want his to know, atleast not yet, and I do think I may be.

Hi and welcome to Healing Well. I'm sorry you've been in pain. If they're checking for your gall bladder they most likely won't be able to see if you're pregnant or not. That's a different area and procedure.

Please talk to your father is you think you're pregnant. You will need his support now more than ever. My daughter had her first child at 17 and although it was a very hard road for her, she and I were brought closer together.

Hugs,
Chutzie

Thank you. :-) I figured it was not possable but I wanted to be sure. I also know I should talk to him but I need to know if I am for sure pregnant before I say anything. Take care.

I think you need to ask for some private time with your doctor - and if you're over 14 you should be entitled to this, and discuss possible pregnancy. You at least need to have it ruled out, as maybe it's part of your pain issues. Also, you don't want to be taking medications without knowing how it could affect you or the fetus. You could probably just say to the tech or your doctor that you feel a little awkward with your father in the room (wouldn't be unusual for a teenage girl to feel) and ask if you could be alone for the test. Then you could talk to the technologist or your doctor privately.

Im over the age of 14, no worries, I'm actually 17. Thats true, but I dont think being pregnant could be the problem becuase this has been happening for some time, and if Im pregnant it would be from this month, maybe last month, me period was very short.
The truth is I'm not sure how I could be haveing gallbladder problems, my dr. has already said to me I dont fit the description of someone my age who could be haveing this problem becuase I guess its more typical for an over weight teen to be haveing this and Im not, but then again my mother is skinny she started getting attacks at 14, same with my aunt, it could run in my fam. Thank you for the reply.

If you had a period it's likely you're not pregnant, but that's not 100%. Seems either way you need to find out, and although it's really not my business what about insuring you don't get pregnant in the future? You're awfully young, and it doesn't sound like you really want to be pregnant. Just my thoughts. By the way, I had my gallbladder removed when I was 19 - was told I was young, too, but it can happen!

You might think about getting an over-the-counter pregnancy test to put your mind at ease. And also your father does not need to be present during the actual ultrasound unless you ask him to be there. That being said, I do encourage you to talk to your doctor about this issue. She might be able to give you some helpful advice. And remember, your dad doesn't need to be there in the doctor's visit with you unless you ask him to, either!

Gallbladders can "go bad" at any age/size. I had mine out 2 years ago and am a small bean and only 28 years old. So it's good to get it checked. Although there are many other issues that could cause abdominal pain as well.

Best of luck and keep us updated!

When I said had my period I ment LAST month, sorry for the confusion. Im actually 2 days late for this month though. Anyone if the U/s their going to give me is even the same kind they give pregnant woman Im not even sure I could ask him/her to just take a look if its not the same kind.

PAlady- I am taking birth control, so I am protecting my self. And If I am pregnant I'll be just as happy as if I got pregnant 6+ years from now, it will be harder then if it had happend later, however if Im adult enough to have sex Im adult enough to take responsability. I am graduating this year, and my fiance said he will be thier for and the baby if thier is one, I could be in alot worse situation, Im happy I can atleast finish my senior year.

They will do an abdominal ultrasound for your gallbladder. They'd normally do a fetal ultrasound if you were pregnant and they wanted to look at a fetus. They will likely not scan below your belly button unless the doctor also asks for a pelvic ultrasound. But you never know. Can you go back to your doc on your own and ask for a pregnancy test there?
