When I put on a new patch at night I notice the next day that my breasts seem a bit swollen and my bra is a bit tighter.  It is not a tenderness type of swelling, just a fullness feeling, and it seems to subside before it's time for a new patch....I am just curious if others have found this happening to them?  It is certainly not a side effect that I would stop taking the medication over, and I have been on the patches for 2 years so I know it isn't like a slowly-developing reaction.  I'm just curious.

I am on the pain patch as well, and the only problem I have is that they do make my skin around the patch and under the patch break out in a red rash, and it does itch a good bite to but I have not had any problems with my breast.I have a sister that could not toilerate the patches because they made her retain fluid.I am sure there will be other's that will be arounf soon that will give there input.

Hi Sue Dave z here.   I have only had a short experience with the fentanyl patch 5 days.  I read the instructions to see where to place the patch.  There was a picture which potrayed the upper chest area as a good place for them.  Since i was only on the 25mg patch I was surprised at my reaction to this med as i staggered around in a fog.  So I quickly went off the patch thinking i am way to sensitive for them and assumed that the 25mg was the lowest amount available.  Also thinking from the instructions definitely not to cut the patches up and the bad consiquences of doing so.  However this week I had my wife pick up some of my prescriptions at the pharmacy and she related my problem with the patch to the pharmacist who stated that they also came in 12.5mg's.  So I am going to ask my pcp about trying that amount when i next see him.  The pharmacist asked my wife where i placed the patch and she mentioned, upper chest.  The pharmacist stated well no wonder he was loopy because that area has less muscle to dilute the dose.  She recommended i try the 12.5mg and place it on the upper arm on the outer side as there is more muscle there to absorb and dilute the med.  Hope this helps.

I've been on the patch for several weeks now and I've never had a problem with my breasts swelling. Maybe you should talk to your PM doc?

Curley, Dave, crps, and Lucia - Thanks for your responses.

I have been on the patch almost 2 years, so this is nothing that would make me stop using it. I only put the patch on my chest (like the insert says) once, it wouldn't stick there well even with a Tegaderm over it. I usually wear it on my hip/upper buttock and it sticks well the whole time. This was more of a curiosity question, and I guess it is just a small side effect for me....hee, hee maybe it is just my body's way of saying to go braless as much as possible!!! (I work from home so this wouldn't be offensive to others, especially my husband)!
