As you know I have chronic back pain along with that that extends to my hips. I have lumbar spinal stenosis , lumbar herniated disc that presses on thecal sac  and nerve roots . I also have a blockage in my l5 and s1 nerve root. My question is can this be causing my hip pains? It hurts on both sides of my hips. I hope everyone has a lpd and weekend.

Nerves pass from the spine all the way down our legs. Nerves that are being compressed somewhere in the spine, which is suggested by your diagnoses, can cause many pain syndromes. You also could have more than one thing going on. I have an excellent physical therapist who was able to identify SI joint (around the hip area) problems in addition to the problems in my spine. The exercises and other treatment he did for the SI join helped THAT specific pain, although did not improve the pain down my legs and in my feet. So you may need to have a thorough exam by your doctor, and maybe a good physical therapist, to help determine what's causing your hip pain. There is also something called referred pain - pain that's felt in one spot, but is actually being caused or "referred" from a different spot. I'm not a doctor, though, so this is just an opinion.

Kara I agree with PAlady here and I know I have sciatica and it effects my hip some times more then anywhere else, even when the pain is more down my leg it seems to originate in my hip before moving on.

My back problems are also in the same region as yours so it may be just that happening with you as well.

I hate it when it flares up as it is impossible almost to get any relief.

I also have severe knee problems and this is where most of my problems are and I have hip pain from those times before my knee replacement when I was favoring my knee or limping and put undue pressure and work on my hip.

If it doesnt let up soon you need to get in and have a MRI just to make sure there is nothing going on that needs attention.

Good luck to you and hope you see some relief soon.

Your welcome.

I certainly hope you get some relief at best and figure out a cause to put you on the right track to relief.

I just hate it when we have to add another pain to the mix, like what we are chronically stuck with wasnt enough.

Good luck!
