Yes Razzle it is a sad story and happening far too much today.
For years Fent was health care providers choice of drug and I remember when I was still a student that there was a med student that was found in the Doc lounge of the teaching hospital here with a needle in her arm filled with fent, that was years ago and most likely before the patch came about.
It was easy for hospital staff to aquire and there was some hype a few years ago concerning the folks who claimed to have woke up during surgical procedures and could actually feel the cutting and operation and they tossed around the idea that teh Anesthesiologist was diverting the fent used during surgery to himself and leaving the patient with a less then theraputic dose thus the reasoning behind them waking during surgery. I know they did actually catch a few doing this and they were sent off to prison but in actuality I have no idea if this is the reason behind all those stories or not.
Alot of kids not only apply the patches those with what seems to be a high tolerance for opiates actually cut them open or chew on them to obtain teh full amount of meds. I cannot imagine this but it happens often enough and they even caught 2 nurses aides when I was part-timing at one of the nursing homes years back straling them off hospice patients shortly after they were being applied by the nursing staff. I was apalled to say the least but they found numerous patches that had been initialed and dated by staff and some being only a day old in these guys car so there was not a doubt that they had to have removed them, leaving the patient in pain or at the very least w/ds. I dont know how they lived and slept with this knowledge but they had been doing for sometime and at several facilities.
That puts the entire 72 hours woth of meds in the system immediately and in the higher MCGs of fent this is going to be a lethal dose to someone not accomadated to it and even those who are.
I think anymore nothing ceases to amaze me.
