This is probably nothing serious but I was just curious as to what it might be and if anyone else has ever experienced something similar. I have this odd spinal pain that comes on suddenly every now and then. Its a weird pulsating pain that goes from the base of my neck down my spinal cord and it feels like my whole spinal cord pulsates. It usually just lasts for seconds at a time but when it happens it just about takes your breath away, its like you just want to be really still till it's over. It doesn't last long and its gotten to where it doesnt happen too often lately but it did happen tonight. The first time I experience it was about a little over a year ago I had a pretty bad upper respitory infection with a horrible caugh and it happened the very first time when I had a caughing spell and it was just a really weird thing... it's happened several times since but has slacked off. I was just wondering if anyone else has ever experienced anything similar. It's just a wierd pulsating, throbbing pain down my spinal cord that almost takes your breath away and you just want to be really still until it passes?

I guess its just a nerve thing....

It could be a lot of things. Maybe nerve, maybe a muscle got strained from your coughing. I'd suggest talking with your doctor about it. Perhaps something as simple as a little physical therapy can help. On the other hand, if it's something else you at least can catch it early.

Hi Jane,

Please do get to your doctor and ask him to either check it out or refer you to a specialist. Pinches nerves, if that's what it is, or muscles that are strained aren't something you want to let go. It's obviously worrying you also and no need for that. Find out what it is ... and let us know. It's something I've never heard of described like that.

I'm actually not "too" worried about it. It is really weird when it happens but I don't think it happens often enough to be too concerned. It was more frequent several months ago but as seemed to subsided for a while until once or twice here lately. It's just an odd then.... If it happened a lot through out the day or daily I probably would see the doc about it. But with it being an occasional thing I'd say its nothing too big. It could just be the way I sleep or something that might bring it on.
