I have herniated discs in my lower back but I don't understand why the very end of my tailbone (butt) hurts SO bad. I have MRI's and X-rays and it shows nothing actually wrong with the tailbone just the discs in lower back ( i don't know which off hand) So this has been hurting for almost 2 years. Some times it's so horrible I can't function and other times it's achy / sore. My pm doctor says that the pain is coming from the lower back and going down. It doesn't feel that way to me. It's so hard to sit, I literally can't sit for more than 5 minutes in the same place it will hurt so bad. This just drives me crazy because it's like I seriously feel like I have a broken tailbone or something. Since I have been sitting for about minutes, my butt feels like it's on fire. The tailbone area is just throbbing so bad and burning. I have just an achy lower and upper back at the moment. Does anyone have this sort of problem or have any idea's of what this could possibly be?
2002 Carpal Tunnel Surgery, Plantar fasciitis, Migraines / Daily Headaches, 2005 Gastric Bypass surgery (200 lb weight loss), 2006 Hernia repair (due to wls), one week later complications and an emergency surgery Bowel obstruction, March 2008 another Hernia repair, chronic back and leg pain all over muscle pain (doctors say it's related to fast weight loss and loss of laxity in muscles etc, Nerve damage / pain in back legs and arms / hands, herniated discs and spinal stenosis in lower back, high blood pressure, anemia, constant throbbing/rushing/heartbeat sound in right ear(doctors have no idea what this is), anxiety and depression most likely related to chronic pain.

Have been on so many different medications! Currently 75mg Fentaynal patch, 600mgs Neurontin 3xday, Immitrex as needed, Avapro, Prozac 80 mgs, percocet for break through pain as needed, Skelaxin as needed, Zanaflex (at night to sleep and muscle Relaxer)

I had a broken tailbone that healed improperly and left me so that I couldn't sit or ride in a car sitting up for more than 5 minutes, the pain was horrible, something like what you are having to deal with. After MRI's, bone scans ,CAT scans,X-Rays,surgery and who knows what, the specialists came up with an affliction called "Pudendal Nerve Entrapment" or P.N.E. as my problem. Un-fixable in my case.Basically it's the nerves that leave the spine through the tailbone to the groin and legs have been damaged and can be very painfull.I'm thankfull that extended release morphine pills and belladonna with opium suppositorries allow me to get around (sort of).Maybe get your Dr. to Google up PNE as alot of Dr.'s don't even know about it.I hope things improve for you pain-wise and may God Bless You...........Rod

aww I'm sorry you had to go through this...... Thank-you for the information and I will mention this to my doctor when I go see her next time. I do get nerve blocking injections at the pm clinic and that helps for about 3 days. It's so frustrating being in pain like this and not understanding what's wrong. Feel better and ty :) Hugs!

hopelessgirl, this is so weird cos about 2 mths ago I developed a large lump on my tailbone. My pain doc noticed it during a procedure and said that it was inflammed. He said that he didn't know what to make of it...very reassuring eyes That was 2 mths ago and it's still there but not as painful . I've found that when it does hurt alot, sitting on ice helps soooooo much. You could try that, if u haven't already. I've also rubbed my trusty horse linamen( Absorbine Jr) on the area and it helps temp.
I am not my pain, it does not own me.

Oh I'm so sorry Hopeless Girl but I do have a possiblity, mind you it's a long shot but it is possible that you have some kind of infection in the bone involved. I did and it was bad. I did learn a lot later that when the dr. ordered bloodwork I always asked her to run my SED rate as well. Your SED rate indicates whether or not there is any infection involved. I learned that the hard way and way too long into the infection to prevent the extensive damage the infection had done to my bones, spine and discs. Good luck. I'm out.

My mother had a very similar problem her doctor told her that although it never showed up on any x-rays she probably had a fracture. He told her it would take up to two years to heal. She used to sit on a special cushion to help releive the pain. It did go away after about two years. I would make sure that I did all of the tests the others suggested though to rule things out. You don't want to wait if more damage is being done.
