Oh, Shelter, I am so sorry for your pain, family & financial situations. Of course you are depressed!

What type of injection are you going to have?

If I don't hear from you, I wish you peace of mind & body.

Shelter, dear! Please don't be afraid! It sounds like you'll have an injection (of steroids I would assume) into your SI joint. I had many of those & if you have a good PM doc, they will give you some "happy juice" (Versed) to help you relax (understatement---you'll be "outta it") and b4 you know it it'll be over. All I ever felt (&I had 9 various injections: SI, facet, epidurals, L4/L5 transverse joints) was a small pin-prick when they do the local injection first, then they make sure the Versed is "working" & do the rest, all under x-ray guidance so there's no mistakes.

Truly, they don't hurt! And some of mine DID give me temporary relief, or at least helped my neurodoc determine what areas were causing the most problems. They are mostly diagnostic, not meant to give much pain relief, altho some people do get good respite for awhile.

Will this be your 1st injection? Maybe that's why you are so apprehensive! I was a wreck b4 my 1st one, but by the 9th one, I was telling THEM what to do! INSIST on some Versed and/or Valuim combo to help you relax. Some PM's will even add some fentanyl to the mix, if you are especially sensitive. But honestly, the whole thing is over in about 10 minutes & perhaps you'll get some relief, which would totally be worth it, no?

I also had slippage (spondy) @ my L4/L5 (which necessitated my recent fusion) and the injections confirmed that as well, b4. So it's just another "hoop" to jump thru in the event you would need further treatments, etc.

I will pray RIGHT NOW that you get some peace this afternoon! and tomorrow Morning I will specifically request that you will be rested, calm & know that the Lord will hold you up on those eagles' wings and SHELTER you!

It'll be OK!! You'll be fine!

Write again if you need to---that's what we're all here for!

Shelter,
I've had numerous epidurals, and various injections. The only one that ever gave me substantive relief was to my SI joint. Only problem is that it only lasted for a few weeks, but the relief was immediate, as soon as I got up off the table from having the injection. And that helped all of us realize how much of my pain was coming from that area.

As Lakeside has said, you should get some type of numbing injection, and sometiems even other meds so you won't feel much. Just make sure your doc is doing it under fluorscopic guidance - it'll be like a little tv unit they watch as there's a tiny "camera" at the end of the needle so they know right where they are. Most docs I know use this, but there was one poster who said their doc didn't and you don't want someone just poking around. I think that's highly doubtful, though.

The anticipation is much worse than the injection! I hope you'll have someone with you (most places demand it, so that you're not driving home, etc.) and than you don't have to worry about asking for extra drugs to relax you!

Let us know how it goes.

I would make sure to ask for xanax to take for 24 hours before any other procedures like this. There is no reason to feel such panic doctors have scripted premeds to help people with this for years and you can ask your doctor for something to help you-I am surprised they didnot offer.
Its probably a little late to get it for this procedure but I would ask next time. And like they said you will get some happy juice.

Shelter,

I know it is unnerving , but I have had Dozens and DOZENS of injections, and yes in my SI joint, my right one is now fused. It is not that bad, The first time I was scared, no pain not a problem. by the time I had around 15 or so, I did get nervous this one time, new doc, I don't know....... So ...well.. I ran in the room and mooned all the techs and the doc! Yes I did!!, and you know what,.. after a laugh, it was painless and over in a few minutes.

Call and ask if you can get some xanax, or sometimes the have given me laughing gas...the gas worked the best, some do it, but ask the center what they can offer, or what your doc can do for you.

I can tell you, just BREATHE!!!!! YOU ARE GOING TO DO GREAT!!!!! and best of all, you'll hopefully get some relief!! WHOO HOO!!!!

STAY STRONG!!!

another one here who has mad many, many inj, they really aren't bad at all. And it will be over in no time...it helps alot if you make yourself relax, at least from the waist down...lol I clutch a tissue in my hand and concentrate on relaxing my lower body so the muscles aren't so tense. Ask your doc to tell u what he is doing as he does it, it helps to know what to expect. Good luck!

Shelter, I am praying for you at this moment! You are going to shine like a new star tomorrow!!!!

Whether this has any relevance, There is a song by U2 called "acrobat"...this  song is my mantra, I have no clue to your liking of music, but there is a line in  that song that says ..." don't let the ******s grind you down."  thinkng about all of it..makes sense, at least to me. I'll pray for you throughout the day tomorrow, sending you great healing and comfort from my heart to yours....hang in there, you are to special to us!! and that is a fact.
peace and happiness

Sheler, it's 5:45 AM here (Central Time) & in mydaly AM prayers, Ihave you 1st on the list! Bless you today & througout your injection procedure.

Be of good courage, know that your doc & his staff are there to help you, make you comfy (ask for whatever you need to stay calm) and before you know it, you'll be on your way home & hopefully w/ less pain for awhile, at least in your SI joint!

Please let us know how you did! And remember: the less you move around afterwards, too, the better the result b/c the medication can stay put in there longer & help you more if you just take it easy for a few days now. Walk around a bit , sure, but REST now and let your body absorb the healing help you'll receive.

Peace be with you---you are never alone!

~Lakeside, watching a beautiful sunrise over the majestic waves of Lake Michigan---just gorgeous! It will be a fine day today & you will do just fine, too!

I am soooo glad you are through with the procedure. All our prayers have been answered.

Sounds like they rushed into the injection without giving the pain / anxiety meds a chance to kick in, but hopefully you can rest easier now.

It's great you can enjoy the small stuff now. A smile or laughter goes a long way in lifting our spirits.

I can really relate to the friends deal, what few I have don't understand what I am going through and why I can't get over it. So they just don't come around or call unless they need something. One concelation is my neighbor who had the same surgery that I am scheduled for next week. She has a family but we have shared alot about our CP issues.

Best of Luck to Ya!!

Shelter,

I'm proud of you getting up , building up the inner core and facing the day... You rule the day!!! it sounds as if it was a good day all around, I got in today to see a new pain doc, he listened, listened a bit more... and even more, and said lets help you! I just about cried, my wife had to almost slap me into attention I was so overjoyed that my pain was validated. I have a new plan now and I saw the veil of darkness lift off my head....It was and is a GREAT day.

I hope the injection work well for you and you get TREMENDOUS RELIEF!! Remember you have friends here that are looking out for you!

I'm glad the glutes are frozen, because that means the injection is right on track!!
Enjoy the small and wonderful things about life.

Glad you are ok!
Rest and heal

Hi Shelter!

Glad to hear you're home & resting! I'm so sorry you felt so much pain, tho! That SI joint is a deep one---but ice packs tonight will help & hopefully you'll get some relief. It takes awhile---many of my injections' positive effects didn't show up until about the 3-4 day....

You were & are still in my thoughts & prayers! Take it easy now & enjoy the Spring weather---today was lovely here!

PALady---sending you sunshine & lots of it! Enjoy!

And Lakeside - beautiful sunset here last night. Thought of you as iooked off to the west. Now for a little more warmth...

Shelter -
I'm not sure what advice your doc gave you for after the injection, but I used ice off and on for the first 24 hours or so. And definitely don't go out and do any gardening and such! It's best to rest for a couple of days.

yes, ice, ice, ice, I use it for 20 mins swceral times a day after a procedure, I also use it on my neck. I'm a major proponent of heating pads, have one in every room(except the bathroom..lol) but ice does the trick for immediate trauma. And don't over- do, listen to your body! If u don't, it won't listen to u ;)

Shelter,

I have been praying for you and hope you have been doing well. I'm glad you are up and about , at least a little. i'm more than sure there is a forum or people here who have or know about Sjorgrens Syndrome. I'll chat with my parents and see what they know, they are pretty handy for this kinda stuff.

I am back on day 4 of the Fentanyl patch. working so far, am able to play and have fun with my wife and dogs (our kids) I hope i keep the level of pain away , i actually feel great, on narcotics, but at least I have a QUALITY of life now! Thank God! you are  still being prayed for, hang in there and it will all work out well,My co-pilot  is watching over you!

peace,

Colerg
