Can anyone share with me how you cope with constipation due to Pain Killers?

My hubby is on the oxy's and he takes a teaspoon of mineral oil every day to every two days, and that seems to help him.

Hope that helps.

Tastes horrible so be sure to have something to chase it with LOL

Hi Jim,

I've been taking oxycontin & oxycodone for a little over a month. Like with other opiods, constipation is unfortunately an issue that you will have to deal with, especially if you start increasing your oxycontin. My doctor recommended that I take metamucil or citricel (sp?) twice a day. I've been taking the metamucil capsules, 5 twice a day is the starting dose for constipation. It is alright, but I don't really have much to compare it to. I also have miralax on hand incase things get bad, as a few people here recommended it. Fortunately, I haven't had to use it yet, although I'm sure the time will come.

I also just started a new "diet" if you will. I read somewhere that eating seeds & nuts are great for constipation, so I went to the store the other week & got flax seeds (these are supposed to be the best, you can also buy them ground into powder), sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, and almonds. I make a mixture & try to eat a bunch of it once or twice a day (I don't really measure out an amount, I just sit at the computer & munch on them). So far I'm really happy with the outcome. This has helped more than the metamucil, although it makes me feel like a bird turn. Flax seeds are also supposed to be great for your overall health, so that is a big plus!

There are a lot of things out there that you can try, so if one product doesn't work for you, I'm sure you can find another that will. One word of caution, my doctor warned me to stay away from the stronger laxatives, as they can actually damage your bowel if you take them consistently. They are okay for a once in a while thing, but not for regular use.

Skeye

ps- I've also found that the oxycontin makes me thirsty. It goes away with time, but comes back every time we increase my oxy. That definitely makes it easier to drink a lot of water. I've been drinking easily four 20oz water bottles a day since starting the oxy.

Jim,
i found out the hard way one night that prunes really DO work! Especially when you eat almost the whole box! I love fruit and prune are no exception, so one night I sat popping them like M&M's while watching TV. Needless to say I didn't sleep all night. The bedroom wasn't where I spent most of my time! LOL

Everything in moderation!

Hi PAlady,

Have you tried prune juice? Believe it or not, I've never had a prune, although I absolutely LOVE fruit. I was thinking about prune juice the other night & wondering if it tastes any good. If it does I might have to try it. If it worked, it would be 10 less pills a day to swallow!

I've been in PM for many years....The best thing that I have found has been Metamucil. It's pure husk fiber and works wonders. A couple of days and you'll be very regular. I have found a couple of teaspoons in a 6-8 oz glass of water is best. I take mine before bedtime, but others I know take theirs in the AM....Whatever works for you.

The taste is good...It's somewhere between OJ and Gatorade. Drink if fast and it will thicken up on you.

Best of luck,

Ex

Jim - good luck! smhair

SKeye - prunes taste like large raisins. You can get them with or without pits, small or large. They're a sweet fruit. The juice I don't think is as sweet, but that may be better. I've had both but prefer the "big raisins."
I don't use prunes or prune juice often. Just on a prn basis. But I take out a limited number of prunes and put the rest back in the fridge! tongue

All I have to do is POUR the prune juice and heat it in a cup in the microwave.
Don't even have to drink it. I'm not making that up.

Interesting. I'll keep that in mind. I do like raisins, although from what you say PAlady, I'll have to be careful. I have a tendency to go through fruit like mad! I'm pretty much obsessed with it. I can eat an entire 5lb box of clementines in a day and a half! Although I try to limit myself because otherwise it is just too expensive.

Fiber One cereal work well. And prune juice doesn't taste bad at all!! I did have to use mineral oil when I was on Methadone and MS Contin.

Jim

maybe it's senekot.

glad you are feeling better already.

I was not able to take oxycontin due to reactions. so I am toughing it out with percocet. they say my headaches are supposed to get better. just waiting for my day while i rest in bed.

It's always nice to hear that someone is having a lesser pain day. Does that make sense. LOL!! Happy for you! tongue

Hi I am on oxy'x 80, so I understand the pain. Make sure you add extra fiber to your drinks/food & I use an OTC product Senokot. Don't get the generic- the one I use says it works overnight.... I take 2 (3 if its really bad) & its better than the other stuff I have tried. My pain specialist told me to try them. Some info for the future I live in an area that does medical studies & constipation from pain meds was one of the medical studies they are doing right now. It may take awhile, but its in the process. And don't underestimate the power of a lot of water. Hope it helps..... remember name brand only (there are several of that brand) look for overnight relief.
RX's: Oxycontin 80 MG 2x's daily; Dilaudid 8 MG 4xs daily; Zanaflex 4mg 3x's daily; Restoril 15mg 1x; Soma 3x's daily; Lyrica 100 MG 3x's daily (pain & fibro.); Phenergan 25 MG (as needed); Amitriptyline 25 MG 1x (chronic pain); Cymbalta 60mg 2x's daily (pain from fibro); Metoclopram (as needed) & Senokot (as needed).

It's Senokot-S. That "S" part on the end is very important. It makes the
pills twice as expensive and twice as effective.

Ok ... "Coprastasophobia". When the conversation gets dull around the
holdiay bird or pig, I'll bring it up and see if I get people interested.
Also, if the conversation turns to politic or religion, I could quick insert
that word into the relatives talk. That will shake things up.

Uggghh I had a nice post typed & my laptop decided to throw a tantrum. I was saying that I take probably 3 pills daily throughout the day. I don't have that 'dear god i need a toilet now feeling'.... its just very natural feeling. Before my bowels were filled with blood from the constipation (yes, I had a colonoscopy). My pain specialist, PCP & GI dr all three said senokot is the best. It can be a little expensive. I tried the entire senokot family & the overnight works best for me. Also, watch your diet, tea & water intake. Don't get the generic. Good luck!!

I only had the side effect when I had taken the 4 pills total. I normally don't have any side effects. Its easy to go, smooth, not as bloated feeling. They are a fantistic help.

Geniophobia ... Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
I used to be afraid of Santa Claus because I thought his deformity was a huge
chin and I just didn't like it AT ALL.
Now ... Hmmmm .... ZZ Top ... I look at them and wonder.
When I got a little older I thought there was an organ under all that beard. It
was very scary to me. Kind of grossed me out. You know.
I will definitely tell this story around the holiday turkey if they start Obama bashing
or pining for Sara Palin.
Ho Ho ... Jingle bells.
Thank you Hello~Kitty.

Back To Topic:

Suppositories do not take care of the real problem. The real problem is higher up
in the bowel. For that reason it's fiber, water, water, fruit, vegetables, bran, prune
juice.
We gotta be real careful.
Pamela

Senokot S has never caused me any problems. I take 4 or 5. I DO NOT
recommend that much. I'm just saying. smhair

I think as long as your not overdoing it, and since senokot is made from vegetables, i don't feel so bad. i couldn't take 4 or 5.... but you have to understand my bowels are very very hard to move. to put it nicely i usually have gushing blood its so bad (turns the water in the bowl completly red) .... and yes its from the constipation. (i have had a colonoscopy within the past year to check) so my problems are more extreme than most. and when i did take 4 it was over 30 hour period, not at once. i drink a lot of water & add fiber to applesauce. (my fave snack) just space it out so you can get the idea of how much you need to take. like i said, my case is exteme. and i have never had a suppositiory, my GI said to stick with senokot, the only suppository i have had is phenergran. I have about 25 i keep just incase i feel nausea from my pain meds. the oxycontin makes me nauseaus easily. when its severe i take the phenergran that way so i don't lose my pain meds. i was also just presribed a med to help with the stomach pain/cramps. i don't have the bottle near me, so i don't know the name of it. betyl maybe? i might be wrong. i'm sure someone on here who has stomach problems can correct me. hope you guys are having a good morning so far!

Hi everyone , New here .

I am on Oxycontin and I find the best thing to take is Herron SenneSoft Natural laxative with stool softener ( pink box ) . The normal dosage is 3 -4 before bed,but depends on how many Oxy you are on. Also , to open up your small bowel once the Senne has softened everything in your large bowel is an enema called Micro-lax .

I wonder....how about trying to drink it earlier in the day? Maybe then things would be "finished" before bedtime? smilewinkgrin

Jim,

I just picked up some prune juice today. I think I'm going to try it tomorrow, as a I have a stomach ache tonight from eating too many of the gingerbread men that I made yesterday nono. My sister, who is very knowledgeable about nutrition and healthy & natural alternatives, said that raisins & dried apricots also work very well.

Glad to hear that you are finding a system that works.

Jim ~

There's nothing "strong" about Senokot-S. It just works like nature. I speak only
for myself. Another persons system may react differently.

It doesn't always work. Last night I woke up at 4 am with "The Problem"

Constipation is something to be feared. I have read statistics on the number of
people who die from constipation. Scary. That's what got Elvis.

I guess here it would be good to add, if anyone feels REALLY bad from constipation
they should see their doctor or go to ER. It wouldn't be pleasant to report such
a condition, but it's better than passing away over it. Coprastansiphobia, as Hello~
Kitty reports can be a reality-based fear.

It's so difficult to talk about. I suppose it shouldn't be. I think this whole
laughter thing about it originated from Beavis & Butthead.
