Hello Boys & Girls,

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm? Do I want to bring up this subject? No, I do
not. blush

On I go ...

The Problem: The Senokot-S factory has been shut down by the DEA. This
is so awful of them, it's almost funny. Almost. I tried to buy it at Walgreens -
maybe other pharmacies sell it. This probably applies to all pharmacies.

This medication is one that has helped me an immeasurable amount. It has
probably kept me out of the hospital for some kind of unspeakable blockage.

I don't expect to have a million responses on this. This post will probably be
there - out in the open - with no responders. Perhaps I will be stock for
laughter?

Oh ****

Pamela Neckpain

There are also some other products that are being pulled off the shelf. Pain
in my neck prevents me from looking further (farther?)

Another PS. My husband tells me that it is NOT the DEA that pulled the
Senokot-S. Anyway .... Someone did. shakehead

Ok Ok ...

After posting that, I got a chill. What if I've been harming myself all these
years?

What if? What if?

I will ask my beloved husband to do a bit of research and will return when
I'm smarter. (I'm kinda hoping someone bright and bold will rush in with
all the answers)

Poor Pam shocked

Pammy, Pammy,
You are not alone.... When I was trying the Morphine I had the WORST pain in my middle & upper back that wrapped around to my ribcage..it was sooo bad I was crying! cry   This went on for d  a  y  s!!! I had never had this feeling before and I was in agonizing pain!! So bad that I wanted to go to the ER.. Then, on the 4th day..it hit me!!  I was severely Constipated/Impacted!!!!  I thought I could handle it on my own.  Boy was I mistaken!!  At about 1:30 am on that Sunday I had to get my mother up and have her go to the store for gas pills, and stool softeners...Luckily for me, my mom thinks of everything and she also brought home a twin pack of enimas... It took me a good 4 hours, but I finally got some relief.  It was awful!!  I had always had constipation issues taking Methadone, but not like this... That's also the night I was spewing all over the bathroom...Remember that night?  I think you were sick as well.

So, remember that no matter what you are going through, we have been through it too..

Talk to ya later.

This is acttually a very appropriate thread here, because, pain meds do cause many people problems with constipation. And that is not a funny situation if you have it!

Hope everything come out alright!

'Colace' (Brand Name, from your friend and mine, Purdue) has the same [active] ingredient and I have had great results with it. I"ve never had to use a stool softener in my life, but with the meds I'm taking I was developing the same issue. I harkened back to when my mother was dying and went looking.

Colace. 100mg capsules Active Ingredients: Docusate Sodium

I remember a thread on this awhile back because we all probably run into this from time to time, or regularly.

Don't forget prunes! Or prune juice. However, in moderation. I found that out the hard way after eating a half a container of those little candy like things! (I love fruits) I thought it would work during the night, and I could get up in the morning and take care of business, so to speak.

Well it worked ALL NIGHT! LOL So don't eat them by the handfuls, but a few might be quite helpful!

OK Tony,

Colace it will be. You are a smart one. How do you know it has the same
"active ingredients." The pharmacist didn't know.

Senokot-S is was very expensive. I guess that "Docusate Sodium" is some
mighty good stuff.

Prunes? OK. Palady. I don't think I'll have a difficult time refraining from
taking too many.

LOL White Beard ... u funny!

Rhonda, I do think we were born under the same sign or something. I didn't
realize how sick you got. I was too sick to read, I think. I got sick from
old Tylenol. (It could be that any Tylenol makes me sick)

Pamela that didn't get by you! smilewinkgrin

Actually PALady's idea isn't a bad one! I mix prunes and dried apricots and eat them together, but only in small amounts. I have also learned the hard way on eating to many! I have UC and I seldom have to worry about this type of problem anyway, infact this type of problem might be a welcome change sometimes especially if the UC flares up!

White Beard,
Nothing gets by me! eyes

I'm going to the store in a little while.
I'll be getting prunes <yuck> dried apricots
<Yum> and Colace. I already have apples.
I'll check one more time before leaving.
Anybody have any more ideas?

I don't like either of my pharmacists.
But ... I'll be changing soon. Pharmacists
are a great resource.

Pam,
I looked and saw an FDA recall dated for 2004...not recently though...I saw this on a google answers thread
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview/id/235617.html
I do know that they have taken Fleet phosphosoda (and other types of bowel preps) off the market due to a risk of kidney damage with some preps.

As for the home remedies (what my husband uses, cuz I tend to go the other way...) lettuce(the dark green type), benefiber (he mixes it with coffee or other drink and can't taste it), apples...

He also takes a daily stool softner (non name brand...every store CVS, Walgreens, Target, Walmart seems to have a cheaper version). So here's to your smooth sailing...shocked

White Beard: I'm hearing you...I enjoy this side effect of the pain meds...part of the reason why I take them...

Hi Pam,

I've found that drinking lots of water really does help.  Also, you can get a bottle of 100mg Docusate Sodium...400 pills for a really reasonable price at Sams.  It is generic (Members Mark) brand, but seems to work as good as the expensive ones.  Good luck!

I was close to having to give myself an enema the other morning. I just couldn't pass the stool myself. I used a glycerin supp. which worked at the last minute before I was going to send my SIL to the store. And i still had more stool high up that passes the next day. That's why I felt yucky for two nights. So today I bought an enema just in case there is a next time and some glyc. supps.\I had been having regular bowel movements as I make huge fruit salads each days and eat tons of it. Then no BM so I started Colace as the softener and Benefiber as the propeller. With narcotics the bowels are slowed down and that's why we have difficulty with constipation. Prune juice is good too!!!

Becoming Undone:

As I understand it, the companies try to hush up recalled items. I haven't been
able to find anything. Haven't looked a lot yet.

The one pharmacist would only say, "It has been pulled off the market because
there were issues with the labeling and safety issues." There were signs ALL over
saying this.

I'm still going to search, this is strange.

Pamela, I have the bottle of Colace in front of me, so I knew the active ingredients by looking at the box.

Senokot, I did a Google, and one of the results return the active ingredients in the short description.

And since you appeared to work well with Senokot I figured that something with the same active ingredients might work better with your system.

Up to you, but familiarity might bring comfort beyond the obvious.

I've never tried this, but I have been thinking about it lately. Aloe. The "juice" that you can drain from aloe leaves is a laxative. It has been used as such for hundreds of years. I don't know how you would come across getting it though. You might need to have a plant, or maybe you can buy it? I know that I have seen "aloe water" in the grocery store before. The wonders of what you learn from touring an aloe factory....

Miralax is the best one going. It was origionally prescription only and was then let out to pasture. It is odorless, tasteless, colorless and doesnt change consistancy at all. You can add to whatever you want and it doesnt hurt it any. You mix it with water and it still tastes like water. I put it in my soda and never know its there.

It doesnt cramp work too fast when you dont want it to and taken at night once you find the right amount for you leaves you regulary in the bathroom each morning.

I only have to use it every other day in a small amount and no problems at all, near to normal.

Only drawback is it is still pretty expensive but the bottle lasts a long time.

In the end (haha) lots of fruits and veggies, Good Oils (will keep you lubricated inside and out, inflammation down and the shute shooting) a little humor for what could prove to be a sore subject.  Another great product is Yerba Prima daily fiber, it will keep you moving but make sure you drink lots of H20 to keep it moving adding lemons helps to balance the pH, works wonders!
ELIMINATING this problem for sure!

LOL Patti aka edt:

You will enjoy our picnic, Patti. You too Angel & Skeye. Everyone is invited - matters
not what your problems may be.

I've tried Miralax, Angel -- not for me.

This Shel Silverstein is for PaLady who is concerned that I might take all the items
on my list at the same time:

I must remember ...
Turkey on Thanksgiving,
Pudding on Christmas,
Eggs on Easter,
Chicken on Sunday,
Fish on Friday,
Leftovers, Monday.
But ah me -- I'm such a dunce.
I went and ate them all at once.

Loved Silverstein. He wrote these childlike verses AND he wrote for Playboy.
That guy was versatile. I was sad that he died. He wasn't through with his work
we loved!
