Most of us love music...music of all kinds. We've shared thoughts on it before but instead of listening to the music of others...what about YOU playing the music. Do you play an instrument? When did you start and why did you choose that one. If not what one would you love to play and why?

I started playing the piano when I was about 6 or 7. My best friend who lived next door was taking lessons so mom signed me up too. We would go together and wait for each other as we each had our 1/2 hour lesson. I guess one reason I played it was because we had a piano. It was my grandmother's so it was very handy. I wish I had a piano and the room for it but it would most likely be one more project that I wouldn't have time for. wink

How about you?

I played the flute in fifth and sixth grade, god was I terrible, I didn't even want to listen to me!! I tried for two years and then gave the school a break and put it away. Wish I could have played the guitar, I had one when I was fifteen but I gave it to my cousin because he already played and his was stolen and he was good!

I took piano lessons when I was a teenager for several years. I never did get good at it and I did practice. I guess I just didn't have it. I loved and still do listening to piano music. It is soothing and relaxing to me. I always wanted to be good at it...I do regret not being able to play the piano...

I used to play the flute & piccolo. I was quite good & really enjoyed it, but I had to give it up when I first injured my shoulders. I can't hold the instruments up long enough without causing myself serious pain & fatigue, as the positioning puts direct stress on the areas where I had injuries/surgeries. Interestingly I picked my flute back up a year or so ago, just to try & fool around it with for fun. While I still couldn't hold it up very long, I found that I had a bigger problem! I couldn't remember all of the fingerings, nor read all of the sheet music fluently! I had to get out my "learn to play the flute book" from 6th grade and look up a few things! It was quite embarrassing, especially since I had been first chair flute & the only piccolo when I played! I guess if you don't use it, you lose it! Ironically, I was actually thinking about my instruments the other day... I miss playing. It was fun.

I come from a very musical family. My grandmother was a master piano player & used to teach both music & elementary school. My father played the baritone from an early age throughout college (he mostly played in the marching band), and my mother was a master violin player. She started off college at a really prestigious music school, but after a year, decided that she didn't want the life of a professional musician & switched colleges & majors completely. She hasn't played in years now, but my grandmother has played tapes of her playing when she was younger & she was amazing! I think that she could have gone very far with her music, but she would have had a very different life!

Do you play an instrument?

   Dear Chutz,

Yes for a short peroid of time I played piano and flute till both were no longer "tuned". Then my breif dance with musical instruments stopped. But goodness it sure made my heart smile.
