I just picked up a new prescription this morning..... for 60 pills I paid $466.65 smhair ... that is with the $30 rebate from the manufacturer on their web site.... I am prescribed to take one to two pills....however I will only be taking one so that I can stretch this out to last two months.

This is for Amrix.... a 24 hour sustained release muscle relaxer ....... My Dr. gave me a weeks worth of samples to try and they really were better than any of the others ones I have tried along the way... the sides effects are less than the Skelaxin I was on before.... I also like the idea of taking one pill before I go to bed and not having to worry about taking it throughout the day.... I did try the generic Flexeril but could not function at all the entire next day... felt as if I had a bad, bad hangover.

So monthly I am paying $612.00 for meds.....OUCH! That's for my three prescriptions.

I do get 60% back from insurance since I have met my $1000 deductible.... but still..... WHY?

Along the way I have learned to ask for samples first from the Dr..... I have so many bottles of pills that I have been prescribed and then couldn't take due to the side effects.

I have also learned to look for rebates from the manufacturer of the drug on their websites.... so I got $30 off my Amrix and $50 off my Avinza.

I am sure so many of you have costs greater than mine.... I am interested in hearing... also beside asking for samples...getting rebates...trying the generic version of the drug... is there anything else to help cut the cost of the meds.... I also recently switched my pharmacy to a small local family run store rather than going to a big corporate chain pharmacy like CVS

I am wondering if the pharmacies that order meds from Canada really make a difference in price and how do they work? How long does it take to get meds.... a week... a couple of days....

What do you all do and what are your monthly costs>
Lisa

Lisa,
In the US, it is actually illegal to get drugs from Canada if those drugs are manufactured in the US. It is a crazy rule, but that's the deal. I know the DEA has been cracking down on that in my part of the country & it seems like every couple of weeks there is yet another story in the news about someone buying drugs from Canada getting caught. Some states have legalized importing drugs from Canada, but that doesn't override the federal law. It just means that the state law enforcement officers will not go after you.

Other things you might try are: switching to generics, signing up for a supplemental insurance plan, checking whether it is possible to get "used" medications at a discount (I heard that was okay, not positive about whether there are any federal laws against it, but I think the federal laws only apply to C2 meds). If your pills can be cut, you can have your doctor write you to take 1/2 tablet of a double strength pill (e.g., if you are currently taking 50mg tabs, you could switch to half of a 100mg tab). If your doc just writes you for the whole 100mg tab, that can be considered insurance fraud, but if you are written for a half tab, it can sometimes save money. Some drugs are only about 50% cheaper for a double strength med. That is not always the case, though, so be sure to check it out ahead of time. Some meds cost exactly double for a 2x increase in dosing.

Hope that helps. I'm sure others will come along with more suggestions. :)

good luck,
Frances
