Just wanted to let all know how I was doing with my new medicine.  I told my doc I was becoming more and more tolerant of my oxycontin and oxycodone so we both thought it was time to try something else.  He suggested methadone.  We slowly weened me off of the oxycontin while slowly increasing the methadone.  I am now about 2 weeks in with my methadone.  I am on 30mg a day and my PM doc says he will slowly increase it if need be.  Heres what I have noticed.  The methadone most definitly lasts longer but the pain relief is not as good as the oxycontin.  My doc says the pain relief will get better once it builds up in my system and as he titrates the dose.  He said I would not need any breakthrough meds.  I am still in pain.  I never expect to be pain free.  I really do not want to be on the oxycontin anymore because my tolerance was going way up.  I wanted something that would last longer.  The methadone helps with the pain but the pain is there with breakthrough pain as well.  Maybe all of you can give some advice.  Should I just wait until he ups the dose (methadone) and see what happens?  I am in pain but it is pain that I can handle.  The only thing is the pain I have now I did not have when on the oxycontin.  I am hurting but I am handling it.  I do know that if I had break through medication I would feel much better.  I quess it takes a while to see what really works.  For me the oxycontin works better but does not last as long.  Any suggestions?  Thank you all and I hope you are all doing good.

Hi, you are talking to the Methadone Queen...ha ha.. But seriously, I have been taking it for a long long time so I know a few things.  First of all, Methadone helps with the pain but usually they will give you something for the BT pain..I take Oxycodone 30 mg. for that.  I am on 120 mg. of Methadone a day and I know that sometimes it just doesn't cut it...if I didn't have the Oxycodone I would be in serious pain...
I think that you might need to increase the dose, but not too much...Methadone has some nasty side of them is that some people tend to "nod off".  That goes away after you get used to it.  Methadone stays in your system for about 30-48 hrs. but it is one of the hardest drugs to get off of.
Be careful, don't take anything like Xanax or Valium, that is dangerous.  I happen to like Methadone better then anything else I have taken for pain...and I have been on a lot.  It does help better after you get it in your system so be really haven't been on it very long.
If you ever want to talk about it my email is on my profile...and good luck.

I have been a spectator for so long..Now it's time to participate.......
