Hi. I just signed up here in hopes of getting opinions from others on my recent issues.

to start off, I'm 20 and physically healthy, but lately I have been getting severe stomach pains and back pains. This has been going on for a month or so and they cycle between dull and sharp pains. I've been throwing up alot because my stomach tenses up alot and doesn't want to keep food down, and the back pain is in the lower region of my back and can be unbearable on most days. I have a history of anxiety issues that have been kept in check with SSNRI medications, but those don't seem to be helping me in any way for the last months. My anxiety usually doesn't bother me much, but now I get really bad anxiety pains in my chest and stomach and it just makes my recent pain twice as bad as when I'm not anxious. I also get spasms throughout my body alot and they hurt alot too. I've been going through hell lately with not being able to sleep with these pains either.

I went to the ER last Saturday with a panic attack mixed with severe stomach and back pains and they put me on Ativan IV to calm me down, which did calm me down somewhat, but I was still in agonizing pain. I went to see my doctor and he gave me Xanax to help with the shakiness temporarily, and he also gave me Abilify, saying that it should help with my severe anxiety, but he didn't really take my body pains seriously. I told him that these pains have been getting worse over the last month and that my anxiety is probably getting worse because of the pain, but he still just keeps tellign me to let the Abilify work. also, the xanax hardly does anything for the nervous pain. It just makes me feel angry, which is what happened when I was put on another benzodiazepam awhile ago (Klonipin)

I went to the ER again last night with severe pains in the back and stomach, but all they did for me was give me an IV of saline and zophrol to stop nausea.... which I didn't have. Actually, it just gave me a headache and made me feel nauseas while I sat there waiting for blood tests and scan results for 5 hours. In the end, they didn't give me anything to help with the pain, didn't find anything wrong with me (they thought it was kidney stones causeing the pain at first) , and now I'm just barely getting by with lots of Ibuprofen which hardly helps >_< . I still haven't slept much and its driving me crazy, and I am missing alot of school lately because of this, and I can't keep missing class more.

note: I had one 5mg percoset pill left over from an injury a long time ago and I took it and it really helped my back pains, but my doctor thinks its just nervous tension and throws xanax at me. I wish he'd take me seriously :/

Any thoughts on this?

thanks

Hi, Kaylius,
Welcome to the Chronic Pain forum of Healing Well. We aren't doctors here and can't offer medical advice, but do offer support to people who have chronic pain.

It sounds like you need to keep working with your doctor. The other thing I would suggest is seeing a therapist for the anxiety. That way the therapist could help sort out what is anxiety-related, and what may be something else. That's the first thing I'd suggest, since it seems the doctors have ruled out immediate causes of pain.

One thing - taking any medicaiton not prescribed for your current condition is technically abusing your medicaiton, and especially with pain medication this is not ok. It can lead down a bad road, especially when you're mixing it with a lot of anxiety medications, so please don't take any more of the percocet or anything else your doctor isn't currently prescribing.

You may also find some help on the Anxiety Forum here at Healing Well. Just use the Quick Jump menu at the top of the page and you can switch easily.

thanks :) . I wasn't abusing the percoset... but I do agree that mixing medications can have bad effects. so it might be an issue with my meds and wutever else I'm consuming lately causing a bad reaction. I'll check out the anxiety forum as well :) .

i have severe chronic back pain due to several breaks & herniated discs and i also get an illness called diverticulitis very easily. which is quite painful, its in the stomach region. i am at a loss as to why they (the er) did not give you a cat scan if you are having problems with your back and your stomach. i get nausiated easily and they like to give me zofran, which doesn't work for me. i am a phenegran or reglan person. i know a cat scan can take up to 6 hours and while you are in pain in the er it sucks when you have a dr who doesn't like giving out pain meds. when i walk in with my list of meds i always get treated like i have a 3rd eye or something. i tell them i want pain medication (iv) and usually i get so demanding they give in to me. but i threaten to tear up the gurney. granted pain meds will not help with the ultimate problem, you have something going on and they need to figure it out. don't feel bad if you need to go back. and just tell them while you are waiting you are in severe pain..... please give me something for the pain/cramping. they shouldn't make you sit there for 6 hours in pain. they can tell by your blood pressure and your blood work if you are telling the truth. and remember the smiley face chart 7 is considered severe pain...... don't tell them below a 6. or you will not get any relief. i hate to say all these things but its better than sitting there hurting for hours on end. i have a pain pump and i can't begin to tell you the conversations i have had with er drs in regards to it. just thought i would give you a few tips on the er since you aren't getting any pain relief. don't be shy about it tell them you are hurting. the worst thing is they say no. chances are they won't make you sit there for hours waiting without some relief. but you need to find out whats wrong. stomach pain can be from impacted fesces to appendix to female issues. so they may run several tests. i have been through tons of tests and its always diverticulitis for me. good luck and i hope you feel better soon. get some answers!!!

Watch out for that reglan, kttn. I took it for almost a year and now I grind my teeth, do weird things with my lips, and twitch when I'm waking up. I also have trouble grasping things with my thumb and pointing finger.
