We haven't had a food topic in a while...guess I've been slipping on my duties. So think back when you were young...waaayyyy back for some of us.
What food did you despise as a child but now really enjoy? Were you forced to eat some particular vegetable or type of meat you hated, partly for the taste or maybe even more because you were forced to eat it? Maybe you were part of the "clean plate club" and you sat at the table no matter how long it took you to get it down. BUT, as the years have passed you tried it again and really like it now. What item(s) do you like now but hated as a kid?
For me two things come to mind. One is avocados and the other is dates. During WWII mom and dad lived in California where avocados and dates were plentiful and cheap. Since dad grew up in norther Idaho and mom started in Wyoming and migrated to Idaho these items weren't available to them. Back then most fruits and vegetables were seasonal in the stores, not like today when you can get anything you want any time of year. Plus both of their families were pretty poor so even if they were in a store there is no way they could have afforded them. (At Christmas time their stocking had 1 orange in it. Nothing else, just 1 orange and it was all they needed to be happy for Christmas.) So these were delicacies to mom and she thought they would be to us also. <shudder> So we were served avocado slices along side of grapefruit sections for salads once in a while. No thanks! We weren't forced to eat dates as those were fixed as a desert item.
Now days I enjoy dates in breads and spreads. Don't eat them straight partly for the intense taste and partly because they are so high in sugar they send my blood sugar reading soaring. And the avocados ... love them! I like them on salads, in homemade guacamole or in tacos and burritos.
