Hey everyone....hope everybody had a Merry Christmas....
Here is a question to all of you out there in HW land that take a pain med for long-term use and also take Oxy IR 15 or 30 mg. for the BT pain....I take Methadone, 120 mg. a day and Oxycodone IR 30 mg. 4 times a day....I have noticed, from the beginning that when I take the Oxy's I get severe burning in my upper back along with pain...sometimes I also get major headaches that nothing will get rid of.....

Has anyone else had this happen?  Is this something that Oxy does to our system?  I have no idea but I know that I DO NOT LIKE IT AT ALL!!!!!

Hi Me,

I never had any of those symptoms when I was on oxycodone. Perhaps you have a mild allergy to oxycodone or you are just more susceptible to side effects? I'd talk with your doctor & maybe consider switching to a different breakthrough medication.

One other thought is to try taking benadryl or another antihistamine, since opioids release histamines. That's why some people are mildly itchy when they are on pain meds. I believe histamines can also cause headaches, so maybe an antihistamine will make a difference with the headache, at least.

A fairly common side effect of opiods are headaches. Some are more likely than others to cause them but they all can.

I agree with Skye though. My first hunch is that the burning pain is probably an allergic reaction. It is possible, and not uncommon, to be able to handle "X" amount of a med or a med combo and not have any reactions but as soon as that threshold is passed...boom. Allergies and/or side effects come into play.

I am that way with Vicodin. I can take 1 every 18 hours and I am fine. More than that and I am on my knees recycling everything in my stomach and then some.

let me clarify the burning....The "Burning" is actually in my back muscles...like I'm having serious spasms.... My muscles are always "firing" according to my last EMG...and I'm used to it , but this is something different....and the headaches? Wow...they are awful... I will try the benadryl, they do make my nose itch.....

Thanks
Me.

sorry to bring back an old thread but I figure bringing this back is just as effective as starting a new thread.

I have been taking oxycontin 15mg and I believe I am having an allergic reaction to it. I tried taking my hydrocodone as well and I am having the same thing happen.

I take the painkiller and it gives me a horrible tension in my head, makes my lymph nodes swell up pretty badly, my neck hurts from the swollen lymph nodes, and I get pretty bad anxiety (worse than it already is). Sometimes it even makes my muscle spasms even worse.

My question is this: Has anyone with a similar problem try another painkiller and not have the problem?

I looked up the inactive ingredients and this is the list:

ammonio methacrylate copolymer, hypromellose, lactose, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol 400, povidone, sodium hydroxide, sorbic acid, stearyl alcohol, talc, titanium dioxide, triacetin, black iron oxide, yellow iron oxide, and red iron oxide.

I figure its a combo of nasty ingredients thats causing me an allergic reaction. I hear the new oxycontin which I would get if I refilled it has BHT as well.

well im allergic to hydrocodone and oxycodone so it doesn't help much but thank you!!

I believe its the fillers in both. Maybe I should try something more natural like morphine? Maybe made-up at a compounding pharmacy so there is just the drug and not 10-20 inactive ingredients that I could possibly have an allergic reaction to?

anyways, my doc said he'd call me back on friday and I never got a call back. Bummer, i feel like my doctor doesn't know what to do with me anymore.

Hi Me!

It's been a while (I think :) I'm a little slow on the memory department right now.

I take oxy IR, but only the 5 mg 4x a day. They don't make me feel bad at all...in fact, they are really working well when I take them, the Ultracet, and the Dilaudid 4x a day too.

I'm sorry I don't have a real answer for you, but Oxy works great for me.

I hope you feel better soon!

Hi Allseeing, weird to see a post from 2 years ago pop up again.....Anyway, sounds like you are going through some severe Withdrawals right now....and I know that they suck...I tried to switch to Morphine once and it didn't work... My Oxycodone headaches seem to go away if I take Advil...My PM told me to take it with the Oxy IR because of the anti-inflamatory in it..and it works...I hate that you had to stop taking your meds....Maybe you should try the Advil with it....Please let me know how you are...

i can't handle ibuprofen it kills my stomach lining. I hate being allergic to everything!!

is there ANY pain medication with no extra artifical coloring and titanium and silicone dioxide and all that BS!?

i think my only option is something from a compounding pharmacy. natural products tend to not give me reactions. what about opium? (its the only natural pain med i can think of....)

looks like he's sending me some "plain" codeine. He had to mail me the script though because walgreens ( i really need to find a good independently run pharmacy) wouldn't take it through fax. I have no idea on the dosage. I figure it probably needs to be fairly high since I was on 15mg OxyContin.

I guess I'll find out when I get it in the mail. I'm praying its before the weekend so I can relax.
