Hi Everyone. I still don't post a lot but I read here every single day and this is such an amazingly supportive group of people.

Okay. So, you know I have chronic pain in my back/neck, etc. I'm in PM for that...Well, I also have TM Disorder and use a bite plate while I sleep. I am currently locked shut but I can open about an inch and my jaw doctor said that I would have to go to a specialist at a university hospital because his bite plate is not working and he is not qualified to treat me. So I have an appointment on Tuesday with another specialist.

That is my med. history in regards to my mouth. Well, on Saturday night I noticed that in the back of my mouth behind my last molar was pain and swelling and I thought that maybe it was because of my bite plate or something that would subside with time. I was wrong. I woke up yesterday with throbbing, awful pain and more swelling. Problem is that I'm allergic to antibiotics--have had reactions to past eight I've taken--true allergy not sensitivity--welts, etc. Docs won't even prescribe antibiotics for me anymore and I have no idea what would happen if it were life or death--I'm sure there's a way...okay..so..

I'm going to call at eight to get an emergency appointment with an endodontist.

I think I have an infection and need a root canal. I'm just venting, I don't think I really have any questions but I do want to say that mouth pain is AWFUL!!!!

Please say a prayer for me if you can. I know that this a very acute situation but boy does it hurt. I can't eat or anything. Any advice on that--like ideas for soft foods, because I have run out of them.

Thanks,

Flower

I know with tooth pain 8 o'clock isn't going to come fast enough. Have you tried some tylenol, it usually is good for tooth pain.
When doing home health I had a client that had to eat soft foods. She ate alot of oatmeal & cream of wheat for fiber. Natural applesause & mushed bananas for fruit. She was able to eat egg salad and peanut butter to get proteins. A soft diet is hard, have you checked the web for some more suggestions?

Keep us posted if you get into the doctor soon. Good Luck!

WOW you are in the same boat I'm in. I just got back from the dentist! For the same thing. I have been up most the night waiting for the office to open. Well I just got back. I will have mine removed next week.

No antibotics!!!! NO WAY I would crawl into a hole and die with tooth pain. What will they be able to do? to get rid of the infection?

Now for me I have to figure out the pain med script. I see a PM clinic but with the tooth pain I would run out of my meds early. So I will be holding onto the script till I get clear details on filling it.

I hope you pain lessens cuz I really know how you feel...

Tooth pain is awful. I had trouble with two and had root canals and crowns was the plan. The dentist screwed up one of my teeth and the crown will not seat properly, meaning now thanks to his screw up I need a bridge, more money. I don't know what it is about tooth pain but it is one of the very worst. Geesh, wonder what can be done for you. If you have one that is infected they are going to have to find some kind of antibiotic to kill off the infection. Please let us know what happens. Good luck.

Thank you so much for the support! I went to the dentist and I don't have an infection, thank God! I'm so happy. Pain has gone down and swelling has gone down significantly since I wrote:) It was so swollen that I was sure that it was infected. The dentist said that there is a big space there and a cavity and he said it was so painful and swollen because something got stuck there. I feel like a big baby, lol. He said that the tooth is chipped, too. He said that I can wait to get it fixed until I am able to open my mouth more but that there is no guarantee that it won't get infected but that there's no way he can do anything until I am able to open.

BSJaguar-Thanks for the suggestions! I am going to buy some applesauce and Cream of Wheat. I do have Tylenol in my breakthrough meds.

LLPLUV -Oh man, I'm so sorry that you have to get it taken out! That sounds so very painful.
In regards to the antibiotics, basically he said that once you're allergic to three or more it becomes a huge problem. I am going to have to go to another allergist because I haven't been to one in two years and then I will have someone to help my doctors figure out what to do if I ever do get an infection. Last time I went, I was tested and allergic to mostly everything they tested me for--pets, seafood, nuts, fruit (raw only)...but this is something I have been dealing with for years so it's still frustrating, but I am used to it. My diet is extremely limited in comparison to others, but there are still so many things that I can eat. I carry an epipen and inhaler in case it gets bad but since I've been very careful lately I haven't been to the ER in a couple of years.

Wow, thanks so much for your help and for reading my babbling. I really do feel like a baby because it wasn't even an infection...I deal with terrible pain everyday, but any pain on top of what I feel daily seems to be exhausting, draining, and just terrible.

Thank you again! This is such a great support group and it is so helpful to have people that understand chronic pain and what it is like to live this kind of a life.

Thanks,

Flower

Flower, I can't open very wide either, I had braces on as a child and I've not been able to bite into an apple since, maybe getting an endodontist or dentist that works with children, my last root canal had to be done with children's equipement as my mouth is small and I can't open wide, just a suggestion...
I'm glad your mouth was not infected! so glad you got in quickly too...if you can tolerate benadrly and malox, then mix 1/2 tsp.of maalox and 1/2 teaspoon benadryl it'll help soothe (rinse and spit only do not swallow)..
I'll wish you good luck with the bite plate and prayers of course...

Flower, awesome so glad it was not an infection. I do understand the allergy problems with antibiotics. I am allergic to all of the very good common ones like the penicillin and its cousins and several others and we are really limited with the oral ones. I have been on alot of antibiotics since Aug and worry about them becoming ineffective. Need to somehow rinse your mouth several times a day with warm salt water to keep any food particles off of that tooth. Maybe that will help.
