Looks like we have something in common. I just got some information and will be calling tomorrow for an appt with a pain psychologist. Hope your appt goes well for you tomorrow and you & your doctor can work together for the ultimate goal which is to make you feel better.

Let us know how it goes!

Went to my apt with the Physatrist yestersay....I have NEVER been treated so badly!
He dismissed everything I said and refused to listen. I even brought in my medical summary from my pc dr showing ALL my problems and he didnt care.
So he wanted to put me on gabapentine (again) and see if it helps and also methacarbonol 3x per day no matter what. He said he does not belive in pain meds and kept asking me why my pc had perscribed them for me....So, I will be trying to see if I can find a diff. doctor...
Whoa is me......

What a jerk!! Don't give up, there is someone out there that can help you. Your PCP may think again before ever referring someone there again. This is not uncommon and happens alot more than it should tho. We do have to advocate many times for decent care so keep pushing on finding another dr.

crohns disease dx 2002 & small bowel resection, still looking for remission whatever that is, chronic pain 22 yrs, added ulcerative colitis 6-05 to the mix, high blood pressure 28 yrs, aortic heart valve insuffiency, depression, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis lumbar spine, scoliosis lumbar spine, peripheral neuropathy hands & feet, COPD & on oxygen therapy, lupus & psoriasis and psoratic arthritis. Several other health issues just not enough room to list it all. Too many surgeries to list and too many medications to list. Currently on 17 different daily medications. Intrathecal pain pump implanted June 05.

Donna,

Sorry to hear that your appointment didn't go well. It seems like for every good doctor there are 5 other bad doctors. It takes a while to find the right one(s), but you'll find them, keep searching!

Are there any other physiatrists in your area? I forget, was it a PM or your PCP who referred you to the physiatrist. If it was your PCP, maybe you can look for a good PM & the PM might even know a good physiatrist.

Don't let this one bad appointment get you too down in the dumps. I know how disappointing & frustrating it is, but I also know that you are going to find that great doctor -- they are out there. You just need to go through the bad to find the good. I can't even begin to tell you all my stories about all the bad doctors that I had to go through before I found the wonderful team of doctors that I have now (with the exception of one -- am trying to replace him, but its a very unusual specialty & I think I've gone through most of the others in the area & all were worse than this guy).

hugs,
Skeye

Are these SSI psychiatrists? I think that job turns them into robots. If not, find another MD quick, a doctor is not one size fits all and you have a right to feel comfortable with someone in such an intimate profession.

I've had a couple of very bad physiatrists. I think they are trying to make sure you do absolutely everything before moving you onto pain meds. It's one thing if you're just starting out with treatment - a physiatrist can be excellent (if he/she's a good one) because they really understand PT and everything, but once you've gone all those routes I don't think physiatrists are too keen on pain meds. I'd ask for a referral to someone certified in pain management who does comprehensive pain management - which includes medications.

Lucy - I think Donna saw a physiatrit, not a psychiatrist - isn't that right, Donna?

Keep up the fight! I truly know how hard it is.

Hi Donna, what or who is a physiatrist? He sounds terrible, I don't know what attracts these masochists into a caring profession. It seems so wierd to me that they can get off on such a power trip and leave us poor patients the worse for wear.

How stressful for you.

I hope you manage to find the energy to try again and find someone more caring next time.

Best wishes and lots of sympathy hugs, golitho
