Hello , I am a 53 yr old male who has come to need hip replacement surgery .The surgeon required a t-cell count of 400 , I being hiv positive had a count of 391 .As I started taking the anti-virals when my t-cell count reached 93 some 12 yrs ago and has been between 300 - 400  ever since. but I was in pain and my doctor switched my anti-virals in an attempt to boost mt t-cell count so I could hve the surgery .Well the count has lingered below 400 and I developed a condition in my right leg of redness , tight skin , swelling and pain subsequently .Dermatology decided this was a derm condition and I've been on steroid ointment for two weeks , the redness has disappated but the swelling , pain and tightness of skin persist . Now i'm taking anti-biotics for these other synptoms as I had some symptoms of cellulitus , but not all of them . I hope this anti-biotic heals the swelling , pain , and tight skin symptoms . Has anyone expierenced a episode like this ? Any info would be a godsend . Thank you ! Also my viral load has been undetectable for 6 years .

Hello Mike and welcome to Healing Well. So glad you found us, although we do hate to see another person be suffering because of pain. It is just awful to have to put up with it too. I do hope the drs can figure out the problem.

I have been battling cellulitis infections since 07 when I spent 8 days in the hospital because of it. After getting out of the hospital I did 18 days of IV Vancomycin thru a port a cath I have in my chest. Mine is in my legs too so I know a little of what you are speaking of.  I have done out patient IV antibiotic treatment as that seems to be the only way to knock it out. The conventional oral antibioitcs just are not strong enough to get rid of the bug. I have lost count of how many oral antibiotics I have taken trying to get rid of this thing and it never happens.  Cellulitis is in the Staph infection family and Staph is very hard to knock out. I have done IV Rocephine twice in the last 3 months. I just finished up a round a couple of weeks ago. Did your dr do a CBC on you before starting the antibiotics to check the infection?

Yes, my legs swell and get very tight, hot and red and plenty of heat inside. My feet also swell. I have been known to get what I call hot spots on my the tops of my feet where the skin gets red & hot and feverish. I have such a high fever in my legs that they have peeled like I had a sunburn. My legs stay red all the time so it looks like I have a constant sunburn on them. Usually when legs swell that bad, you need a diurectic to get the fluid off of them, are you on one like Lasix? Have the drs told you to stay off your feet and get those legs higher than your heart? If not you need to do that to help with the swelling. Once I get past the fever in the legs I wear compression hose as that also helps with the swelling.

Cellulitis can make you really sick so keep an eye on this stuff. I  had so much fluid in my legs the first time I was put in the hospital that my legs actually weeped. I had fluid breaking thru the skin of my legs. I have been told that many times once you start down the cellulitis rod you are prone to keep getting it over and over and so far that has been proven to be true with me.

I have severe psoriasis and it is on the bottoms of my feet leaving open raw sores which is the perfect breeding ground for infections. My feet have not healed up since August of this past year, its a constant battle. I do hope you will be one of the lucky ones and only get it one time and be done with it. If I can answer any more questions post them here and I will answer them if I can.

Hello Mike....and we welcome you to the forum! You will find the members here very supportive, and very knowledgeable. That being said...I'm afraid that I don't know much about your condition either. Keep checking back, and there will be several members along with suggestions. Stray has given you a start in that area...and she is is a pretty knowledgeable member. I hope you find a solution to your suffering, and again, welcome you on board.

Michael

Thank you all very , very , much . Although I've battled drug abuse as an adult , this is the first time something has knocked meoff my feet and taken my independance .I've been suicidal as a result of the pain , the loss of independance and my feeling of hoplessness .It seems I can't get better , and return to taking care of myself.Being able to talk with caring people who have beeb here is a great help , I felt better just knowing there were other people like me who survive and deal with this nightmare .And also thrive in spite of it , I so needed to know I could smile again , and I needed to be able to look upon life as the gift it is once again . Thanks so very much to all .

Hi Mike, most of us here go on that roller coaster ride of emotions trying to stay on top of the pain both physically and emotionally.

It can really redefine who we are, lots of posts here will reflect your exact feelings. A lot of us see pain psychologists to help us deal with these complex emotions and help fight the accompanying depression. Unforetunately CP and depression often go hand in hand. You are really not alone.

Please come and post anytime to rant or rave or whatever you need. Your leg sounds impossibly sore, I hope your doctors come up with some solution for you soon.

But welcome to HW, golitho

Hi merrygirl and thanks for the shout out ! Actually right now I'm not taking anything for the mental /emotional side of my pain . Learning to think positive has been a savior in that aspect I listen to Eckhart tolle , a kind of philospher who has some good info on the ego and how it can control you and motivate your actions both good and bad , I also speak with family a lot to stay grounded , I want to take as little meds as possible . Thanks for checking in with me !See n the chat room later ?turn How are you doing with your depression ? Do you see a therapist ?

Mike you did a fine job tonight in the chat room! Now you have no excuse not to be there, other than maybe you forgot, or will have something else on. Your a champ now..so we will see you tomorrow evening. If you get there early, and no one is there, keep checking, and some will eventually get there.

I'm really not quite sure when it is supposed to start, but I show up around 7:30 to 8:00pm They are a great bunch of members, and it is a good time to meet everyone. We may let our hair down a little, and then at times it can turn somber when the mood calls for it. I'm so glad you found this forum, and hope you enjoy your time here, and for that fact I hope you make this your home. We have a good crew here, and there is a lot of experience on this forum.

You will find that our members come from all over the world, and we share one common problem, which it Chronic Pain. The source of our pain may differ, but regardless how it differs, we still all suffer from pain. I have found that personally for me, this is the best Chronic Pain forum on the web! Hands Down! Period! If you have any questions, feel free at anytime to ask away, and of course the Moderators are just an email away for you. Simply click on their names, and you should be presented with their emails. I forgot to ask you, but do you go my Mike, or Michael in real life? OK!...I said about everything I can think of, so we will see you tomorrow evening Sir! :)

Your friend,

Michael

Hey, Mikel, I just wanted to stop and welcome you to the forum. Sorry to hear you have so many issues going on right now but you've come to the right place. We all have different issues but still have one thing in common.

Feel free to pop in anytime. Don't feel as though every post has to do with chronic pain either. Sometimes it's nice to be able to discuss something other than that to get our minds off the subject. Take care and hope you can get the cellulitis under control before it gets out of control. I've seen the effects of it first hand and it's nothing to mess with.

OK I got it Mikel....form some strange reason...I'm having a terrible putting on the L on the end of your name. See you tonight. I think Straydog is your person about the leg, and I hope she can shed some more light on it for you. However, I really think you need to take her first advice and get to your DR about it. I wished I could help you with this problem. Hang in there, and we will see you tonight.
