Hi Momto6boys,

I noticed in your signature that you have a severe Vit. D deficiency. Can you tell me how that impacts you and what sorts of symptoms/problems it causes. My bloodwork came back showing a Vit. D deficiency, despite the face I take 2000 units daily. I don't know much about what a lack of D does, so I was hoping you could provide some insight.

I asked this publicly, as I'm sure others might benefit from your experience as well.

Thanks in advance, and I hope this isn't a bother.

hugs,
Pam scool

Hi Pam...

No bother at all, silly tongue I see an endocrinologist... and on my last major blood work (beginning of Jan, I think)... he included a Vitamin D test on me. Levels should be over 20... mine was a 5. He then put me on a 50,000 unit loading dose... 2x a week...for 8 weeks. I have a slip to get repeat blood work...but just haven't had a chance to get it yet. But it looks like I'll be on some level of Vit D supplement for a long time.

In all honestly, I have so many health issues...that I can't separate one symptom from the other other...and figure out which is causing which. The one thing I KNOW the deficiency can do is make you severely fatigued and cause major muscle weakness. In fact, I've read that sometimes it can get misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia.... If you search "Vitamin D Deficiency"...it's amazing how many symptoms it can cause...and how closely it is linked to chronic pain... I read something else that said all chronic pain patients should have their levels checked. I can't really tell if the supplements helped or not...because I'm now pregnant w/ twins...and feel pretty lousy anyway.... But I need to go get my blood work and see where my levels are.

Anyway, I would highly suggest seeing your doctor and getting a script for the higher dose pills... I really hope it makes you feel better. Is my memory wrong... or weren't you dealing with being really exhausted?? Regardless, I hope it makes you feel better, Pam :)

Thank you so much for the reply Tina!! Yes, I have been majorly fatigued lately. I see my doctor next week so will follow on this with her.

Thanks again, and congratulations on being pregnant with twins...how incredibly exciting!!!! I know it must be causing you more fatigue and such than usual, but it's still pretty exciting! (I LOVE babies!!!!)

hugs,
Pam

I had a Vit D deficiency a couple of years ago, and I was told that the symptoms are "sort of" similiar to Rheumatoid Arthritis. My symptoms were slightly swollen hands and very sore joints (feet, ankles, and hands). I was put on the massive doses of Vit D for a few months, and then multi-vitamin with extra Vit. D from here on out.

I have celiac disease, among many other things. Before I started on the gluten free diet, I was extremely low in many nutrients, especially Vitamin D. A Vitamin D deficiency is one of the most common symptoms of celiac disease or gluten intolerance.

My Vitamin D levels were normal after less than one year on the gluten free diet.

It's interesting that many conditions seem to improve on or even require a gluten free diet...including Lyme disease, because a gluten free diet is frequently lower in carbs, and carbs feed the nasty little Lyme bugs. Lyme disease also triggers gluten intolerance in many people.

Of course, a diet of meats, eggs, veggies, fruits (i.e., all natural unprocessed foods) is probably the safest, healthiest diet no matter what ails you! Grains are a very recent addition to the human diet (just the past 10,000 years) and our farmer ancestors have modified them significantly from the way they originally occurred in nature. Our bodies apparently don't process grains well at all.

Best wishes to you,
JoAnn

Hi Kimber...

Thanks for the well wishes... Yep - life is funny.... I wasn't supposed to be able to have more children, for many different reasons (I had my last son over 6 years ago)... and here I am... 13 weeks with twins. "Somebody" has a sense of humor, huh? :)

I hope you continue to feel better every day, Kimber :)

Thank you everyone for your input. I will be talking to my doctor this week to see what the numbers are and if it's a big concern or not. I've been trying to eat "cleaner" (ie: cutting down on processed foods, eating more real food), and I've been losing weight and feeling better that way. I just seem to always be exhausted....

I really appreciate everyone's replies (and no worries about anyone hijacking the thread to offer congrats to Momto6boys - it's exciting news to congratulate her on!)

hugs,
Pam

Pam...

I just want to tell you I think you are on the right track talking to your doctor and such. Let us know what you find out... I also wanted to tell you I'm sorry... that I really wasn't trying to take the focus off of your post..I'm sorry if I appeared to do that... the only reason I mentioned my "news" is it was hard for me to explain "why" I couldn't tell if the supplements and such worked... !

Thanks everyone for the well wishes.. I really appreciate it. It's still a pretty complicated situation w/ my health stuff... but I'm just taking things ONE day at a time.

Take care everyone... :)
