Hi everyone, as many of you know monday was a holiday and i was off. I went back to work tuesday and was having a pretty good day considering it was the day after a holiday. The day after a holiday is always a heavy day we always have three days of mail to get out in that day. It was a typical day and i was having my normal daily pain as i always do,but things were going well. I was making pretty good time and was almost finished with my route.I was in my last subdivision when i got out of my truck to deliver a pkg. Well this customer had reguested all her pkgs. be placed up on her front porch,so i was putting the pkg on the porch. Her porch has 6 steps up to a landing the two more up on to the porch. It also had been raining off and on for several days. So as i trunned around i came down the first two steps to the landing.I was thinking to myself becareful i see water beaded up all over the steps and looks like it could be slippery.Well no sooner than i had thought that i took the next step and it was as if i had stepped on a sheet of ice.My feet came out from under me and down i went hitting all 5 or 6 steps on the way down. It happened in a split second and i found myself laying at the bottom of the stairs. I began to cry as i was in pain instantly and i layed there looking around to see if anyone was around to help me. I was all alone hurting wet and in shock so i layed there for 5 mins or more and decided i would have to get up and call for help. So i slowly began to move to see if i could even get up off the ground i made it to my knees then worked my way up to my feet. I got back in my truck and called the office my supervisor came out and she took pictures of the porch i had fallen  from. She asked me did i want to see their drs. or what did i want to do. Well just in a matter of 15 to 20 mins the pain level had rose off the charts and i could tell my hip and lower back was swelling, so i told her to take me to the er. I went to the er and they xrayed me but the swelling was so bad i couldn't lay flat and not sure they got a good xray of the area. My swelling had gotten the size of a babys head and my left cheek and lower back is solid purple . So now i'm waiting on the red tape to clear so i can make workers comp cover me seeing my own dr. I want to make sure nothings broke or that i didn't cause more injury to my buldging disc. Oh and the er dr. only wrote me out of work for three days and sent me home on crutches. This is day two and i can tell you i really doubt that i can go back to work on monday. So now i'm wading thru a sea of paperwork and policys trying to get approval of further medical care. Wish me luck and i pray you all are having a lpd

Aunt Kay I am really familiar with your back situation and all and I do hope you do not intend on returning to work until you have seen your own dr. Now, my question to you is, in your state under worker's comp do you have the right to see a dr of your choice? If so, please call and get in there ASAP. I know you have seen specilasits in this past with your back, do you know if they will see patients with WC claims? Not all drs will, this is why I am asking. Has your supervisor turned in an accident report to their insurance on you in order to get your injury filed with their ins, that can be faxed to them to speed up the process. Be prepared for an ins company try to say all your problems are pre-existing. You can have what is called an aggravation to a pre-existing condition which is where you would fall under. Please keep us posted, I worry about you, because I know how you have struggled to keep working.

Oh Kay... I am SO sorry this happened to you!!! I remember falling on ice once straight onto the back of my head and neck as my feet came out from under me..it happened so fast, there was nothing I could do, and I remember thinking as I fell, "oh God, don't let me roll into traffic" as it was right beside the road.

I do hope your supervisor at work is someone who will work with you to get your WC claim taken care of, and I really hope you don't have hassles with their staff or doctors. How is the bruising and swelling today? Do you have to have x-rays again once the swelling is down? I will keep you in my prayers that things work out fine for you from a WC perspective and that you will be feeling better quickly.

Take care of yourself!

hugs,
Pam

Kay...

I'm so so sorry you were hurt so badly! Please do take care and stay home as long as you need to. I would guess the ER doc only wrote 3 days as that gives you time to see your regular doc who can write you out for more. That might be an ER policy because no person in their right mind would on give you 3 days and then put you on crutches so you can drive your truck and deliver mail!

I'll pray for speedy recovery from pain and that you be treated respectfully by the 'red tape folks'. Rest and come on when you are feeling up to it.

Oh Kay,

I am so sorry about this new injury and the pain that you are in. Please see your Dr as soon as you can. Things like this are so dangerous and you obviously have a seriously painful injury. There is no way you can go back to work so soon and I'm sure noone expects you to. Please document your brusing by photos just in case WC gets to be a pain. A picture is worth a thousand words some times and WC is a nightmare to so many people. You may need more than just the reassurance of your supervisor because they can sometimes retract that support as quickly as they gave it. This is not to say that yours will, but to give you something else to consider.

My main concern is your health and that I hope you improve soon. Please, please don't wait to see the correct Dr on this one.

All my best!

Well i'm up early because i can't sleep due to pain and now i'm backed up on top of it. So to answer some of the questions here. Before i do thank you all,straydog,ms.Bunky,MIKEL99,Chutz,retiredmom,skeye and golitho for your support and concern it really means alot to me and you all are a wonderful group of people and i also feel as if your my second family.Okay Suzie i can go to a dr. of my choice, been on the phone trying to get things worked out to see him. The dr. that i'm seeing for my buldging disc can and will see me for this injury also.My supervisor is on top of things and i received a pkg. from hr yesterday 8 pages long telling me of my rights and what i need to do and what forms i'll be needing (It's a little over whelming so much paperwork)but the dr. asst. said she'll walk me thru the process and i can call hr with questions which i'm sure i'll be doing.I did have my hubby take pictures of the area so i'll have proof if needed. Man is it ever nasty looking and i've started brusing in the small of my back no telling how much brusing there will be when it's all said and done. I've decided not to take anymore pain meds because they have me constapited and i've been taking miralax and fiber with it but it's not working so my tummy is extended and i think thats why i was nausea all day yesterday. I'll keep you all posted take care all and pray for lpd for all of us.

AuntKay you cannot go w/o pain meds in your shape right now, by all means discuss this with the dr and get some ideas from him/her on how to handle the constipation. Many, many people are plagued with this when on pain meds. I do hope also that you have some good muscle relaxers to take. Take care I do worry about you. You are one tough bird, but sometimes, its ok to drop that facade and take care of you.

I went to my pcp today and she put me on robaxin and some tramadol.Told me she couldn't write me out of work so is sending me back tomorrow on light duty. I'm really dreading it because of the pain and she put on the form no driving so how does she think i'll get to work. I did drive to the drs. office today it's maybe five mins. from my house my job is a 45min. drive and it was painful just driving to the drs. office . I had to sit on my right cheek and keep the left side elevated so i'll be in a strain all the way to work and i'm sure that will add to my pain level.I also know from others that have light duty at work they get treated like they did something wrong. They give you the crappy hrs. and far as your days off don't expect two day in a row off i'll wind up with like a sunday and a tuesday. Uggggggg they really try to break you down when your on light duty and to be honest i really don't feel like being there i hate being in pain and having to act as if i'm alright. Hope you all are having a better day than i. I could go on but i'll stop venting now just had to let some of it out.

Hey Kay,

Your last post really intrigued me in that you were given instructions of "no driving". If you drive to work and are injured (or injure someone else), are you going to be covered by insurance? I'm not trying to make things worse, but it is a real consideration because we obviously never expect the unexpected and I don't want anything to happen to you to make things worse.

Have you considered faxing this paperwork to your job for them to make a decision on? I know that some restrictions are impossible for an employer to accomodate and they may not "want" you in the office if you are not able to perform in a safe manner. The Gov't is a real stickler for Dr's excuses (as I'm sure you are aware).

Please consider calling in and speaking with someone in human resources to make sure of what you need to do. I'd also consider a fax trail or at least an email trail to cover you in the event they tell you that you need to stay out a little longer.

I wish you all the best!
