I have a disease called Wegner's Granulomatosis Vas***is. It was nearly fatal and I was only 27. I am now on serious pain meds ans prednisone and Imuran. I have lost my hair during chemo injections and have kept it short because it goes through stages where it thins out way to much. So my question is, I have been in the sun more while on these meds and now my scalp is flaking away. I don't know if it is an effect from the meds and the sun, but it is nasty. All I could think to do id shave all the hair off and put coconut oil on my head to get it moist again.

I do not know about the side effects but as for your hair, try going to the store and getting a nice extra virgin olive oil and then take it and soak your hair/head it in then wrap it on some plastic saran wrap for about an hour. Wash it out using a very gentle shampoo and that should help a bit with the flaking and the lost moisture.

Have you seen a dermatologist? I lost a ton of my hair due to a combination of having hypothyroidism & using a topical anti-inflammatory gel on my head. I feel for you b/c it just felt like the worst thing in the world. But 6-7 months later with different treatments we were able to get my hair to stop falling out & about 6 months after that my hair had totally grown back. I don't know how much of your hair might grow back, but there are so many treatments that can help. But they need to see whether your hair is growing properly, but just falling out really quickly, or whether it isn't growing well. Then they can suggest vitamins, topical treatments or medication that can help. In addition to other treatments, I was given a prescription shampoo for my flaky scalp (it was so bad it was bleeding in some places). And that helped pretty quickly straighten out my scalp situation.

feel better,

   Dear Blue,

Good morning. Welcome to the Healing Well Community. My name is Dani and it is very nice to meet you. I hope you find Healing Well to be a wonderful place for support, friendship and knowladge.

I am terribly sorry you have such a debilitating, potentialy fatal,  life long illness. I just finished learning about it and I am floored. The amount of pain you experience daily has to be a tremendous struggle. I am so sorry you have to fight so hard just to survive. What concerned me the most was that there is so little that can be done to slow the progression down.

As far as the hair.. I learned about what you have to do to supress the progression and I hate the though of your shaving you head now that you finally have hair for a while. Mostly I would suggest seeing a dermatologist. As far as reactions with the meds.. I recently went to florida and was out in the sun constantly despit the warnings on my medicine. I ended up peeling very quickly and with "hard, flaky, rough" patches at the areas most effected by the sun. I used vitamin E concentraited oil and Aloe mix. It still took about 2 weeks or so to get ridd of the ruff, flaky patches. Here are a few ideas in this article

I dont know if you have any hat shopps where you are.. but perhaps try out some stylish hats and sew a folded bandanna around the inner rim. It will help protect your head, but also keep you from sweating terribly.

I really hope you can find something that works, but that still allows you to enjoy your summer days. Again, it was VERY nice to meet you and I look forward to knowing you better as time goes by. Stay strong!
