Good Morning CP friends...Happy Monday..

Can anyone give me more info on the patches...do you like them, what had you been on before you went with the patches.

Right now my doctor is giving me oxy. I started out with 10 mg. It was the best thing since sliced bread. I felt giddy in that I had my "old" life back. I felt really good, my pain seemed to be all gone!!!

But then...slowly it all started coming back. We increased to 15 mg. It was ok, but then very shortly, it seemed to be not enough. Just went back to my rhuemy last week, she increased me to 20. She said she would increase it  2 more times then off to a PM. Its been 5 days, the 20 isn't doing a whole lot. She told me to call her and bring back the 2 future scripts for oxy and she would change it if I noticed it wasnt' doing so good. I will give it to the end of this week, and then call her. So she will bump it up to what ever level the next one is. I have a feeling I will also be asking her about the PM. Is the next one 25 or 30..anyone know?

Anyway...sorry to ramble, but I was wondering if this is something that I may end up trying down the road.

Thanks

Anybody??? Sitting here at work and I'm in pain. Getting ready to take a second dosage of tramadol, but it hurts. When I first started on oxy, it did not hurt like this. Pain is so constant and always with you...its like the companion from heck that you never in your life want.

I am on 50mcg/hr Fentanyl patches and it barely makes a dent in my pain. I was on vicodin before fentanyl. By the time I'm on Day Three of the patch, I am in unbearable pain. But my pain management doctor won't up my rx. (Time to find a new pain management doc?)

My fentanyl patch literature comes with a 'transition guide' that tells you "If you take this much oxy, you should take 'x' strength of fentanyl patch." I'll dig it out of the trash at home and get back to you tomorrow.

I don't understand, are you aking Oxycontin? it comes in dosages on 10mg, 15mg, 20mg, 30mg, 40mg, 60mg, and 80mgs (in canada it comes in 5mgs). In fentanyl patches, it comes in 12.5mcg, 25mcg, 50mcg, 75mcgs, and 100mcgs. The patches do work well for some people, but it's not good if you live in a hot place, or sweat alot or run fevers often as it can make the medication release too fast and cause side effects and even death. I didn't like the patches cause they never would stick for me, even with the special tapes and patches you put over them, and eventhough they're suppose to last 72 hours, they never lasted that long for me sometimes, and some doctors wont change it for 48hours. But it all depends, it has it's pros and cons, like it's nice not having to worry about medications for a few days, just slap it on and go, but for people like me, it didn't work like that. Also I built a tolerence to it too fast, fentanyl is a nasty pain medcation to me, I remember I once had it come off during the night and I woke up in the worst withdrawals ever, I was kicking the couch so hard from my legs kicking like crazy uncontrollably, I'm surprised I didn't break the couch. I ended up going the ED and they had to give me a shot of pain medication to help me til the next patch started working, it wasnt fun at all. But this is just my experieince of course, everyone's is diffrent. Also there are several diffrent brands out there of the fentanyl patch, people have their prefence in what works better and which one doesnt. I hope this helps some, just my 2 cents worth.

Hello Hope! I guess I have the same question as Hello-Kitty....are you or your PCD thinking about going from the Oxycontin to the Fentanyl?
Or, are you on Oxycodone? If your on the Oxycodone, there are several other meds I would try before the Fentanyl.

I always thought that the Fentanyl was sort of the last resort on the path of pain meds. It's a very powerful med!

I hope you come back to read this post, so we can get a better idea of what you meant, then I bet someone here will be able to point you in a better direction.

SE wink

If your current daily dose of oral Oxycodone is between 30 and 67 mg/day, the recommended fentanyl patch would be 25 mcg/hr.

Good luck.

Sorry, just now reading this.

I am currently taking 20mg of oxycotin. I started out with 10, then 15 and now we are trying 20. I started taking it thursday night. 5 days later, it does not feel any different from the 15 to me. The pain is still there. I also am given 60 5/325's for break-thru. I am to take my tramadol 3 times a day as usual with this. My pain is currently hovering between 4-5/ and 6-7 range with no flare, to 7-8.5ihs while in a flare. At this point I am taking the percocets. My rhuemy said we would try to increase the oxycotin 3 more times (the first starting with the 20). So I will call her by next week( as I am on limited funds right now in that when I take time off from work, I'm not getting paid for it.) or by the end of this week to let her know as she instructed me to, that the 20's are not doing the job of relieving my pain.
She was not sure if the next dosage was 25 or 30 mgs. I will also be asking for the number of the pain management specialist. I think I am at the point where I need to have my pain managed by someone who just does that. I think my rhuemy does not manage this type of pain levels and beyond often enough to know how to work with me. She had indicated several times that I should see the PM.
Hope this answers the questions. Since I hurt myself this morning coming to work, I feel the pain increasing as I am typing. I am trying to wait a little bit before I take the percocet because I need to run a few errands during lunch and I would rather wait until I am not driving right now.
