Hi everyone this is kimber9807 dont know if anyone remembers me. I have missed you guys how is everyone? I hope everyone has low pain weekend. I have chronic back pain. I posted here about a year ago when I had my gallbladder surgery. we have moved since then so havent had a chance to post for awhile. My question is I am having oral surgery next week my oral surgeon prescribed me percocet 5/325 for after my oral surgery. The directions said take 1/2 to 1 tab every 4 to 6hrs as needed for pain. I never heard of taking a half of tab before . Is it safe to break the percocet in half?

Hi Kim...

Good to hear from you...and welcome back!

Sorry you have to have oral surgery :(  Re: the percocet... I've never had it prescribed that way (taking 1/2)... but there's no real "reason" that it can't, I suppose.  It's not like a time-released med that would be dangerous to cut 1/2.  It's oxycodone (which is immediate release) and acetaminophen.

I hope your surgery goes well - and, again, welcome back!

Hello Kimber! Yes I do remember you!

It is perfectly fine to break them in half!  However a .5 Percocet is a very low dose, but you may get enough relief by breaking them in half. No need to worry about it.

I too hope your surgery goes well!

I am sure it is ok otherwise the dentist would not have written the rx that way. Many times drs will write scripts and not only tell the patient to cut the pill in half but will also put it that way on the label. Sometimes they do it that way because its cheaper according to my PCP. A few of mine are written like that.

You can also get a pill splitter at the drug store and it makes it easy to cut the pill.

Thanks Screaming Eagle. Im glad to be back. I took percocet a few years ago for my back pain and I never heard of taking 1/2 tab before. depending on how much pain im in after surgery I may do the 1 tablet since the directions said 1/2 tablet to 1 tablet every 4-6 hrs as needed.
