Hi!

Does anybody else take Marshmallow?  I was recommended it by the mother of another Crohnie.  She said her son takes it and feels great because of it.  I just started taking it yesterday.  Does anybody else use it?  And if so, how much do you take?

I have heard of marshmallow root (genus althaea) used in a tincture or tea for sore throats. When I looked it up I read that it is also used for gastric ulcers. Maybe someone here has used it and will respond.

Here's what an online herbal dictionary says:

  • Marshmallow leaf is used internally to treat inflammation and ulceration of the digestive tract, oral and pharyngeal mucosa with associated dry cough. It relieves irritation of the mucus membranes of the mouth, throat and gastrointestinal tract and helps with respiratory complaints including bronchitis and asthma.
  • The polysaccharides form a protective film over inflamed and irritated mucosal tissue.
  •  I take it in capsule form and purchased it at the health food store.

    Hey there,

I have not heard of it, but I would be interested to see what the rest of the members know of this treatment?

    Thanks

My nutritionist told me about Marshmallow just today! I'm also looking into Probiotics.

Is there anything else you take, or just the Marshmallow?

I take Calcium and Vitamin D, because I'm on Entocort.  I have a probiotic, but I often forget to take it because a) it's in the fridge and b) I'm supposed to take it two hours after I stop eating in the evening.  For some reason that's hard for me to remember all the time!

I drink a lot of herbal tea (A LOT) and I really feel the feel-good effects of Eater's Digest by Traditional Medicinals.

Let me know if you try the Marshmallow!

Did your doctor suggest the vitamins, probiotic and teas? I'm trying to figure out how best to approach trying a different way, and who to ask. I'm still very new to all this. Since my doc appointment yesterday I get the feeling that my doctor doesn't know what to do with me! Which has made me really frustrated the past 2 days. Since I'm not on anything right now (yay allergic reaction) - I've been doing more and more research and looking for other options. I am one of those people that don't trust medicine unfortunately, which makes me a bit stubborn sometimes.

I'd like to try a natural route, but of course don't want to risk taking things that don't work well together.. if that makes sense.

I love tea! What are some of your favorites? My favorite brand is Mighty Leaf or loose leaf teas from Teavana. I have anywhere from 2 - 4 cups a day. Especially in the fall/winter.

I recall from botany classes a type of Mallow plant called "Marsh Mallow" I wonder if this is what the Drs are talking about. Here is a picture ---
    http://www.ct-botanical-society.org/galleries/althaeaoffi.html

It appears to have a long history of medicinal use. The following website says "The great demulcent and emollient properties of Marsh Mallow make it useful in inflammation and irritation of the alimentary canal, and of the urinary and respiratory organs."

I found these by googling "marsh mallow"

My dietician recommended the probiotics and my doctor the calcium and vitamin D.  My mum heard about the Marshmallow.  Teas were recommended by nobody (except I drink Kukicha, and that was recommended in the book Healing Crohn's the Natural Way).  I just drink them cause they're yummy and don't bother me at all and don't have sugar.  But I do feel the benefits of them - especially chamomile, fennel and mint.
