I haven't written in this column for almost a year--a very bad year both for Crohn's and my husband being diagnosed with uveal/corneal melanoma.  about 5 months ago, my MD put me on Questran (Prevalite) and it was like a miracle.  From that day on, I've had no Crohn's symptoms!  I've had perhaps four days with mild diarrhea which I traced back to what I ate, but now I can eat raw vegetables, popcorn, whatever I want in most cases!!  I don't know if this bile-binding medication will help any of you, but it might help someone!!!  It took me almost a month to get used to the fact that I wasn't having 8-10 stools a day!!!  I am still on Remicade but only because they tell me if I go off it, I may not be able to go back on it because I will have built up an immunity to it.  I was on Pentasa for years but now am off all my meds except for the Remicade and Prevalite.  Thank you to the Good Lord and bless all of you!  Sharon

Hey there,

My hubby used Questran for years and yes it helped him too.  He doesn't use it anymore as he does ok without it right now.  But your right it did work for the D.  He used it right before meals 3X per day to start.

Sorry to hear about your hubby and my prayers are with you both.

Take care.

Gentle Hugs

I haven't heard of Questran, my GI has never mentioned this Rx to me but you better believe next time I see him I'm going to ask him about it, he wants me off of the Entocort and maybe this Rx would help. Does Prevalite control intestinal inflammation?

I am amazed that Questran worked so well for you but I'm quite happy to hear of its' success.

I've had Crohn's for 22 years and have had 11 surgeries(resections).....I may not even have active Crohn's right now but the main problems I have just result from short bowel syndrome and all of the adhesions and scar tissue I have built up from all the surgeries. Its a mess in there! ;)

Anyway, I won't go through the list of meds I've tried, you name it I've had it(including several courses of remicade, etc). Questran didn't help me out too much but that is probably because I had already lost so much bowel before I was started on it. CONGRATS on your sucess with the med and my best to your husband. Happy New Year!
34 Year old male-diagnosed with Crohn's at 15. 10 surgeries from 88-03. Have tried Remicade, Asacol, Imuran, Pentasa, and Prednisone and haven't really responded to any of them. Chronic diarrhea since 92. Due to such a short bowel a good day is 10 bathroom visits,25 on bad days. Also still have plenty of pain/cramping. I'm on Oxycontin 160mg and a Duragesic Patch 50. Just went on disability, can't work unfortunately. Thank you everyone for your replies--I  have only had Crohn's for half my life (I'm now 72) and it was always a mild case until they found cancer in a patch of inflammation when I had a colonoscopy and after the bowel resection, of course, it got ugly along with fissures, cramps, etc.  But  I really feel like a wuss sometimes when I hear other people's stories--like all of yours!  Nonetheless, it's a horrible disease and I hope and pray that you all find some relief like I did!  Let me know!!  A better and happier New Year to all of you!
