Hi everyone! I am kinda new to this site. I have been reading the posts for a month or so now but this will be my actual first post. I will do a better job of telling you all about me and my CD a little later on. Right now I really need some help with the constipation. I usually go about once a week. Or if im lucky I can go two days back to back but then again its still another week before my next BM. My doctor told me that I could take a tablespoon of milk of magnesia once a day to keep me regular. But I really hate the taste of that stuff!! Is there anything else that I may could take on a daily basis that anyone might know of? Stook softner or anything? Thanks for any replies!!!

you could try colace, that's a stool softner and then once you get back on target take fibre supplements, that aids with D and with C...keeps you regular, just drink plenty of water with it and otherwise as well, it's important to drink alot of water in general for CDers to keep us from getting C really bad and dehydration.

I take stool softners everynight. There little gel like pills, no taste. It keeps things soft and helps you to pass easier. Good Luck! Oh and Miralax is another good option.

My doctor just put me on Amitiza (lubiprostone) - a newer med for treating constipation.  I've been taking 1 capsule twice a day for about 2 weeks now.  So far, it hasn't seemed to be any better than taking stool softeners and Miralax every day, but I'm going to give it another month.    Maybe it would work for you.

Check out this link http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/news/2006/NEW01305.html

Good luck to you!

Thanks everyone so much! I took a stool softner last night to eventually get things going again. I have taken some different fiber supplements over the years such as the fiber pills and the mixes for the drinks. but none of them really ever seemed to get me regular. I think I may try some more of them now. And as for the miralax, I was prescribed what I thoguth was miralax about last year. I know its over the counter now, but it was like a powder that you mixed in with any kind of drink and it was actually tasteless. Is that how the over the counter kind is? I see that Jusdebbie takes a cap and half. Is that just taking it or mixing it with a drink? Or am I just thinging of something else all together? LOl. Also nanners.... aren't the stool softners habit forming? I know the bottle says not to take them for more than seven days? Thanks everyone for everything so far. This is such a pain dealing with C. I think it is the worst part of my CD. Really thanks so much everyone!!!

IMHO I would recommend a stool softener for short-term use, then natural fiber products. But, with the fiber products I emphasize the intake of plenty of water. Ducolax pills work well for stool softener and Fibercon with lots of water.

Welcome to Healing Well. Keep on posting.

48 y/o woman.  Diagnosed 4/06 after colonscopy, SBFT, CT-scan all showed crohns. 3 months later, after pred and remicade, all tests showed no crohns. In December had adhesions cut through a laparoscopy. Now just taking Glycolax, Ultra Fiber Plus and vicodin as needed.

I alternate between D and C, but for constipation, I take Metamucil capsules, When you first start taking them, they can cause gas and bloating, but if you start with a small dose and work your way up, it will work well, and doesn't have chemicals like laxatives. And I agree....lots of water! Good luck

I have taken everything amitiza, miralax up to 4xday, mistoprostol. m.o.m. stool softners, laxatives, enemas, herbal treatments. Nothing helps. Now I was diagnosed with slow transit constipation and told I need colectomy. Im very scared. I hope That you find relief. I am the expert now days in anytest they can possibly do on digestive tract. I also had two nissan surgeries to correct reflux. so pretty much have tried it all. True some stuff gives you really bad cramps or gas pains. Definately dont take too many laxatives I get such intense wanna die pain.

I drink miralax 1 capful/day. I mix it with orange juice and it's wonderful. I didn't know that you could mix it so for the longest time I was being tortured drinking it with plain water. =0/ (BTW, this is not a laxative it pulls water back into your stools. That lax at the end freaked me out before. ) Also if you choose to take docusate, it is a detergent so it lubes up your poops so it slides in the intestines better. My doc that you could take either/or cause they work differently. Whatever is your preference.

I also eat the metamucil cinnamon cookies (make sure you drink at least 8 oz of water) or take the capules.

When I can't go for more than 4 days I too take milk of magnesia until I finally go. Hate the taste of that stuff....

p.s. it is impt for you to get regular. I didn't know what to do for the past 5 months so I would take something for a couple of days and then stop once I had a bowel movement and then take it again after 4 days. Starting last month, I have been doing it everyday and it works. Just find out what your threshhold level is. Some people need to add less to make it work, others have to add more.

I don't know if you do this, but I also take a probiotic daily. =0)

I am soo sorry nietzche6. I hope that 2008 brings you relief....
