What does mucus in the stool look like? I've seen white blobs of something twice this last week since I glutened myself the week before (I have celiac). Am wondering if that is mucus or undigested medication? The first blob was rather large with a small dark red spot on one end. Does Asacol look that way unabsorbed? I've seen occasional bits of the Asacol coating (not frequently, just once in a while) which is normal according to the rx notes. But then there was another white blob today - smaller in size than the first one, about the size of a 50 cent piece. First one was twice that. No red spot this time. Guess I'm really wondering that if it's mucus, then maybe my severe gluten reaction inflamed the crohn's. The D is much better than it was but pain in the LRQ is very apparent these days, although not unbearable.

I had asked my GI when we talked in October what mucus looks like, and she gave me a dumb answer - "well, it looks like.. you know- mucus!" Does that mean like the stuff that comes out of your nose and can be different colors? You know how when you get a dumb answer you feel like you've asked a dumb question. So - no dumb questions here - we're all in the same boat!

I'm still fairly new to the crohn's and have a moderate case, according to the GI, which is not currently in a flare. Sure hope I'm not building up to one.

Thanks for your help - Becky

Mucous  is a jelly-like substance that intestines make to keep the lining of colon moist and lubricated. Increased amounts of mucuos in your stool may occur with diarrhea or constipation. It can be clear to a cloudy, whitish color.

Thanks Kitt. Did you find that info somewhere? I tried but didn't have much luck. The blobs did appear jelly like but not clear - definitely a cloudy white. If it continues I'll let my doc know, of course.

I knew what you were asking and I just double checked my reference: Brunner & Suddarth's Medical-Surgical Nursing; Ninth Edition.
Glad to help.
