Hi! I am a regular lurker here and I do on occasion post something. I have an 18 year old son that was diagnosed 11/2 years ago with Crohns and has not yet achieved remission. He has been on Remicade and Imuran for the last 10 months and in August following a colonoscopy which showed little to no improvement his dose was doubled and he now gets Remicade every 5 weeks. As the Remicade wears off he tends to get this foul breath which he also had for at least a year following his diagnosis. Do others get this during flares or as a sign of a flair. I am just curious. Is there anything to do because brushing and mouth wash just do not seem to be enough. Any input is helpful. Thanks.

My daughter had bad breath for awhile, long before she developed any symptom's of Crohn's. Her situation is different because by the time Crohn's showed symptoms, the bad breath was gone.

There are many things that can cause bad breath. Both your dentist and doctor might be able to let you know what might be causing it. The following link to the American Dental Association talks about some of the possible causes:

Probiotics aids with bad breath (taken daily, flaring or not) along with IBD (CD or UC) symptoms....it's also said that eating 3 oz of yogurt daily can also aid with bad breath, however probiotics in powder or pill form have much more good bacteria which will likely aid more with IBD symptoms and bad breath...many eat yogurt along with taking probiotics.

Bad breath is usually caused by a few things, improper oral hygiene, medications and bacterial overgrowth which IBDers tend to have and is why probiotics usually aid well for symptoms of CD or UC.

when was the last time he got his teeth cleaned? he should brush his tongue and also check tongue for a white film that will be yeast of the mouth that cause a nasty smell. Also drink lots of water dry mouth makes breath stink.
